Nancy's parents were Joseph Welch,born in England John came to the Chambers Creek area about 1808, when he was four years old, along with an older sister, his father Phillip, and mother Ruthy. Nancy's parents were Joseph Welch,born in England John came to the Chambers Creek area about 1808, when he was four years old, along with an older sister, his father Phillip, and mother Ruthy. When he grew up, he married and settled a homestead on the North Fork of Chambers Creek in Swain County, NC. John Chambers was originally buried in Hyde Cemetery in Swain County. In 1943, when the TVA decided to build Fontana Dam, John was removed from Hyde Cemetery and reburied in Lauada Cemetery, along with his wife, Nancy Welch Chambers. This area of NC was a part of Rutherford County, formed 1779, until 1791 when Buncombe County was formed, part of Haywood County when it was formed in 1808, until Macon County was formed in 1828 and finally became Swain County in 1871 when it was formed from part of Jackson County formed 1851, and Macon County. (The town in this area was called Charlestown, it grew up around the settlement at the mouth of Deep Creek and received its charter in 1887. The name was changed because of confusion in the mail with Charlestown, SC, in 1889 to Bryson City, NC, in honor of Col.
