Description	:	Phillip served in the Civil War in Co. F, Walker's Battalion, Thomas Legion. He inherited his father John's homestead but didn't like it's location, so they sold the land to Joseph W. Anthony and filed for another homestead farther up the mountain on Big Fork Ridge, which lies about midway between the north and west Forks of Chambers Creek. Phillip's original homestead went to Levi Kailer when Joseph and his family moved to Oklahoma. Phillip and Rutha were the parents to 12 children. Phillip Marcus Chambers was removed from the Hyde Cemetery in 1943 and reburied in the Lauada Cemetery in Swain County, NC.An 1880 census shows Phillip and Rutha in the Forney Creek township in Swain Co., NC.By 1880, son Thomas was married and not listed on the census with his parents. Also lists grandsons Robert and Harry as living in the household. Son of Jonathan Chambers and Nancy Welch. Husband of Rutha Melvina Sawyers, married 11 DEC 1849 in Macon Co., NC. Phillip, along with his wife Ruthy, son John about four years old, and John's older sister, came to this area about 1808 from Walhalla, SC, and established a homestead near the mouth of Chambers Creek, which was sold upon his death. Ruthy died sometime before 1820, leaving Phillip with six motherless children. (Four of Phillip's brothers, James, Joseph, Benjamin, and Elehugh(Elihu) were also land owners in the area by 1820, but it is not known if they came as a group or separately).
