Read More	Stratford Courier November 12, 1914 STRATFORD MAN IS KILLED BY HORSE Walter Deck Killed Almost Instantly When Horse Rared and Fell on Him Saturday Evening One of the saddest and most serious accidents in the history of Stratford occurred Saturday night when Walter Deck met with an accident which caused his sudden death. Mr. Deck was returning home from town on horseback and was on his way to the barn when the horse became frightened at something in the yard. Mr. Deck attempted to make him go forward, when the horse rared up on his hind feet, falling onto Mr. Deck in such a manner thath the horn on the saddle penetrated his intestines. gouging a large hole in his stomach. His wife, who was in the yard at the time to meet him when he came home, immediately telephoned for aid, and two doctors were sent to the scene of the accident at once. As soon as the doctors arrived they made a quick examination and were able to put their entire hand into the hole caused by the saddle horn. He was carried into the house but never regained consciousness after the accident. The news of the terrible accident came as a shock to his many friends and the bereaved wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends in their hour of sorrow. Besides a loving wife and children he leaves an aged mother, one brother and one sister. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 1:30 at the M.E. church. Stratford Courier November 19, 1914 Obituary DECK Jonathan Walter Deck was born near Stratford, Iowa, March 11, 1867, and died at his home Saturday, November 7, 1914, at the age of 47 years, 7 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Leona Iles December 8, 1897. To this union were born three children, namely: Floy Pearl, Dwight Iles, and Evelyn. His father died when he was but two years old; also one brother and three sisters have passed on before. Mr. Deck was one of Stratford's best known citizens and his death came as a shock to the whole community. He was a man who was appreciated by all with whom he came in contact. As a son, he was kind and good, always mindful of his aged mother. Words cannot express the appreciation of his life in the home. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, always cheerful and wanting to do the things that best pleased his loved ones. He was the happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. Besides the wife and children he leaves his aged mother, one sister and one brother, besides other loved ones and a host of friends to mourn his departure. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church Thursday afternoon and was one of the most largely atte3nded funerals ever held in Stratford, quite a number being unable to gain admittance into the church. Rev. C.A. Anderson, pastor of the church, payed a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. At the close of the sermon and after the large audience present had been allowed to cast a parting glance on the face of their departed friend, the sad cortege made its way to the Oakwood cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest.
