Many of the earlier residents of this county will hear of the death of Jonathan Wood of Herington with regret. Mr. Wood died on Nov. 24th and his funeral was held Sunday, Nov. 24th, the same day on which the new Methodist church in this city was dedicated and the day on which the old church was discarded. On this rests a most unusual co-incident Mr. Wood was the main builder of the old church. He was a carpenter by trade and it was under his supervision that the first Methodist church in this city was built almost forty years ago. It is strange indeed that on the same day the old church was put away, after its forty years of usefulness, that its builder should pass also. Jonathan Wood was a brother of the late Sam Wood and also of S M. Wood, now living at Elmdale. He came to Chase county soon after the close of the Civil war and located here with his brothers, Sam and S. M. Wood. Mr. Wood followed his trade as a carpenter, working here, at Elmdale and in other parts of the county for a number of years during which time he became well known to Chase county people of that day. He then moved from the county and Herington has been his home for many years. He was 84 years of age at the time of the death and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. One son, Will Wood, lives on the Whitney ranch while Arthur Wood, the other son is manager of a business firm of Council Grove. The daughter lives in Oklahoma. W. L. Wood of Fox creek is a nephew of Mr. Wood and both he and his son, Dave Wood, of this city together with a number of relatives and friends at Elmdale went to Herington for the funeral Sunday.
