Four Members of Joseph Ludvicek’s Family Shot and Killed Early Wednesday Morning The farmhouse on the Carroll township farm belonging to Joseph F. Ludvicek, nearly six miles west of Clutier and a dozen miles northeast of Tama, was the scene of a shocking tragedy late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning when Mrs. Joseph Ludvicek, aged 65, and her three children, James, 26, Albert C., 21, and Helen, 20, were killed by shooting. The farm is owned by Joseph F. Ludvicek, who lives two miles to the north, and he had rented it to his brother James, who lived there with his mother and his brother and sister. His father and mother had separated, his father making his home with his daughter Mrs. Albert Uchytil, three quarters of a mile to the west. That the tragedy had occurred was first learned this (Thursday) morning when Joseph F. Ludvicek went to the house to see his mother. On arriving on the farm he was surprised by seeing nobody about. Opening the door leading into the kitchen he found the body of his brother, Albert, lying on the floor near the foot of the stairs leading to the upstairs rooms. Going on into the front room he found the dead body of his mother, lying on the cot on which she had evidently met death while sleeping. He made no further search at the time, going to the home of his brother-in-law, Albert Uchytil, telling his father of his discovery, and inducing him to accompany him to the home. Upon their return they went upstairs and found the bodies of James and Helen lying on adjoining beds in the front room. Coroner Thompson, Sheriff Peterman and County Attorney Ferguson were immediately notified of the tragedy and they together with a score or two of other citizens of Tama and Toledo, proceeded to the home of death. The house was a veritable charnel house. On entering the kitchen door the first object to meet the eye was the body of Albert, clad in rough blue shirt and dark blue overalls, lying upon the floor. Beside the body and near the right hand of the body was a 22-calibre Winchester repeating rifle. Four empty shells were secured by Coroner Thompson and eleven shells that had not been discharged. While there are no eye witnesses of the tragedy who are alive there is no reason to doubt that Albert killed his mother, brother and sister, and then committed suicide. The bodies had been dead more that twenty-four hours decomposition had set in. Each had been shot in the head and upon each face the blood had dried until it looked as though it were bound by a tightly drawn surgical bandage. The body of the mother and those of James and Helen were reclining in bed as though death had come to them instantaneously while they were asleep. The neighbors had long regarded Albert as queer. Frank Kunch, living a mile north, had looked upon him as scarcely responsible, and to a newspaper man reported that he (Albert) although he had no money, had attempted to buy Albert Benda’s farm in that neighborhood and was irritated when Benda refused to draw up the papers. It was also reported be neighbors that he was teased by his brother and sister because he devoted so much time to bees, of which he had a number of swarms, and was not particularly enthusiastic over ordinary farm work. The last time any of those who were killed were seen alive was late Tuesday evening. Joseph F. went to the farm in the evening and took his mother home with him for a short visit, at the end of which he took her home. When he reached her home he left her after a brief talk with her and his sister. He did not see Albert, who had gone to bed, nor James, who had gone to Toledo, on a business trip and had not yet returned. The bodies were taken this afternoon to Toledo to be given the services of an undertaker and it was thought they would be interred in the Salacek cemetery.
