The sad news was received here Tuesday morning of the accidental death of Mr. Anthony Schreckengost at Ottumwa the evening before. The sad news was received here Tuesday morning of the accidental death of Mr. Anthony Schreckengost at Ottumwa the evening before. Anthony was night foreman in the Milwaukee railroad yards at Ottumwa, and while coupling freight cars was crushed between them and killed instantly. The accident occurred at 9 o'clock p.m. Anthony was required to couple a coal car and another flat car, partly loaded with lumber, which were being switched on to a side track. While he was in the act of coupling, the cars came together with such force that the end of the coal car was forced in and Anthony was caught and crushed between the two cars. He was seen to step back quickly, but the velocity of the moving lumber car was too great. His head was caught between the corners of the cars and his skull crushed at the base of the brain. His death was instantaneous. The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Schreckengost of this place. He had been breaking on the freight between Eldon and Keokuk eleven years. He had been night yard foreman for the Milwaukee about 12 months. He leaves a wife and several children. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schreckengost went to Ottumwa Tuesday, and returned with the remains last evening. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The services will be in charge of the Keosauqua lodge, Knights of Pythias. The deceased was a member of the Eldon lodge of the Knights of Pythias and the A.O.U.W. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railway trainmen and the Switchmen's Union of North America. Source: Van Buren Co.
