Berney of Wolbach and Miss Charlotte Belle Johnson of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, were married at the home of the bride's parents in Alberta, March 10, 1902, returning to their home in Greeley county on the 24th, where a grand reception was tendered them. They received many useful and nice presents. The bride is the daughter of Wm. Johnson, a prominent former resident of this county. ~~~~~~~ From The Greeley Citizen, Jan 20, 1905, page 8, transcribed by Linda Berney: Accidentally Kills Himself - A sad accident occurred about 4 o'clock Wednesday whereby Joseph Berney, Jr., lost his life. He, in company with J. Purlefine, Jr. were hunting rabbits near the home of Mr. Purlefine, 8 1/2 miles northeast of town, and while crossing a field Mr. Berney espied a rabbit in a bunch of grass. Being but a step from the animal, he did not shoot but endeavored to kill the rabbit with the butt of the gun. In so doing he held the barel pointing upward, and the force when he struck with the gun caused the load to be discharged. The entire load struck Mr. Berney square in the forehead, tearing away the top of his head and killing him instantly. Mr. Purlefine ran to his home, procured a horse and hastened to notify the parents of the young man. They went to the scene of the accident and found Joe lying on his back, still grasping his gun. Deceased was about 29 years of age and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berney, Sr. one of the oldest and most respected families in this section. He grew to manhood on the old home place and was a prosperous young farmer. He was married in the fall of 1893 to Miss Dollie Johnson. He leaves a loving wife and child, besides his parents, brothers and sisters to mourn his untimely death. The family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church here Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. ~~~~~~~~ Charlotte married second Charles Alvo Armstrong, born May 13, 1873 in Illinois, died August 28, 1938 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Charlotte's death not yet located.
