Joseph Brian Braun was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene. Braun was being pursued by the Nebraska State Patrol when the accident occurred. At approximately 3:20 p.m., a state trooper attempted to stop him for speeding while he was driving a 1987 Chevy pickup on Highway 22, approximately five miles east of Monroe. Braun didn't stop and sped off, the trooper gave chase, according to a press release from Platte County Sheriff's Office. Braun drove the vehicle onto a muddy cornfield about six mile northwest of Platte Center. The trooper's cruiser became stuck in the mud, and he was unable to follow when the pickup sped back past him on the county road. A short time later, the Platte County Sheriff's Office received a report of a pickup matching the description of the suspect's vehicle crashing into the Loup Canal. The sheriff's office and the Platte County Dive Team responded to the scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
