Ronald Leonard “Huey” Braun, the son of Francis Hubert and Pauline Marie (McGuire) Braun was born on March 22, 1948 at Cedar Rapids, NE. He attended grade school at Enfield School District #13 in Greeley County, Timber Creek School District #28 in Boone County, and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School with the class of 1966. Following high school Ron volunteered for the draft and entered the United States Army on April 12, 1967. He served and fought in the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of Sergeant and was a squad leader of Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry, (Cacti Blue) 3rd Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. On April 11, 1969 he was honorably discharged with the following decorations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 2 Overseas Bars, and Marksman Badge Rifle M14. Ron respectfully declined a Purple Heart Medal, saying others were more deserving. Following his discharge he stood guard in Washington D.C. for President Nixon’s inauguration in January of 1969. Ron worked for several farmers, and then worked construction with his brother Jerry. He then began trucking in the late 1970’s until 2010 when he retired. Following retirement, he drove the gravel truck for the county, and then worked for Wlaschin Farms. He also started his own tree removal service. Along with working, Ron was very proud of his service to his country, as well as his fellow veterans. He traveled every year to Vietnam reunions and was able to go on the Vietnam Honor Flights to Washington D.C. twice. Ron made it a point to visit all of the Veteran Memorials in the area. Ron was awarded the Eagle Lapel Pin commissioned by the National Department of Defense for Vietnam Veterans and a Certificate of Honor and Appreciation at the local Veterans Day Program. He was also instrumental in starting the 35th Infantry reunions for his platoon. Ron also enjoyed going to the casinos, playing pickle cards, watching the Price is Right and old westerns, visiting with friends at the Cedar’s Rapid Stop in Cedar Rapids, and attending Riverside ball games. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NE and the Dan Cox American Legion Post #44 of Cedar Rapids, where he served as commander. Ron is survived by his mother Pauline Braun of Albion, NE; brother Jerry Braun of Cedar Rapids, NE; two sisters: Irene (Jim) Dresch of Primrose, NE; Elaine (Dan) Zoucha of Schuyler, NE; two nieces: Angela (Eric) Allgood of Henderson, NE; Krysti (fiancé Derrick Sova) Braun of York, NE; three nephews: Chad Braun of York, NE; Jordan and Justin Zoucha of Schuyler, NE; great-nieces and nephews: Jackson and Jacy Allgood, Rhylee Braun, Piper, Behr, and Gunnyr Sova; along with many other relatives and many friends. He is preceded in death by his father Francis in 2009, two brothers: Jim in 2014 and Joe in 2007, and nephew Matthew Dresch in 1987.
