Carson McClain. -------------------- Fairfield Ledger Friday, July 17, 1942 Page 4, Column 6 Joe E. McCLAIN, Retired Farmer, Is Stricken Joe E. McCLAIN, 78, rural route Libertyville, passed away yesterday afternoon July 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Jefferson county hospital where he had been a patient the past six weeks. Mr. McCLAIN, a retired farmer, had been ill for several years before being brought to the hospital. The body has been taken to the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds awaiting completion of funeral arrangements. He is survived by four sisters all of near Libertyville, his wife having preceded him in death some time ago. Surviving him are his sister Mrs. Clar (sic - Clara) B. FRY, Mrs. Edna POLLOCK, Miss Sadie McCLAIN and Mrs. Mary PEARSON. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Methodist church in charge of Rev. McCLAIN Joseph McCLAIN, son of Joseph and Lucinda McCLAIN was born January 30, 1863, in Liberty Township, Jefferson county, Iowa. Mr. McCLAIN spent his entire life in that county on the same farm which his parents settled on in 1842. He was united in marriage on December 29, 1891, to Alice O. CARSON who preceded him in death on February 15, 1939. With the passing of Mrs. (sic - Mr.) McCLAIN another chapter of history of the local community is written. Born and reared in a log cabin just southeast of Libertyville, he witnessed and was a part of the growth of the state of Iowa as a state in the union, and was representative of the pioneer spirit that wrested the fertile lands of Iowa out of the wild state to make it fruitful. Representative of the pioneer stock that was resourceful and able by strength and diligence. Funeral services were held in the Libertyville Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday July 18 with the Rev. Clyde E. Teel in charge. Music was furnished by Mrs. Viola Moss and Mrs. Bessie Armstrong with Miss Ruth Moss as pianist. Pallbearers were Theron Cochran, John Booth, L. A. Heston, Dave Tedrow, Lew Fordyce and Joe Hoffman. Interment was in Fell Cemetery.
