STEICHEN--ALTON CITIZEN ANSWERS CALL--PASSES ON AFTER A FEW DAYS OF ILLNESS The death of Joseph “Joe” Steichen, well known Aton retired farmer, on Friday evening was a sad shock to the community, coming after only a brief illness. On the advice of physicians here he accompanied his wife and daughter to Rochester Tuesday of last week for a medical examination, which revealed an unfavorable verdict and he returned home on Thursday, passing on the next evening, April 18th, at his home here. He was 57 years old last August. Joseph G. Steichen was born August 3rd, 1883, on a farm near Alton, son of the late pioneer residents, Mr. and Mrs. John Steichen. He attended the local St. Mary’s School and grew to manhood in this vicinity. On January 25, 1910, he married Miss Louise Langenhorst of Hospers at St. Anthony’s Church. Four children were born to the couple: Celesta, Viola, Margaret, and Earl. Six months ago the family moved to the home in town formerly owned by the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hoefer and purchased from the estate by Mr. Steichen last fall. He is survived by his wife and children and by three brothers: John of Alton, Nick of Remsen, Ted of Alton; one sister: Sister M. Natalia of Sioux City. Another sister, Sister Mary Innocence of Dubuque, died on May 8th, 1938. The family have the sympathy of the community on the untimely passing of the devoted husband and father. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Mary’s Church, the Very Reverend J.M. Neppel officiating. The church was filled with sorrowing relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Otto Probst, Matt Probst, Mike Gergen, Otto Kettler, Felix Streff and O.N. Homan. 97 relatives were served at dinner, with neighbors assisting to the kitchen and nieces of Mr. Steichen serving the meal.
