Joseph was born March 23, 1912, in Topeka, the son of Anton and Margaret Geist Heit, and was reared on a farm in the Kinsley- Offerle, Kan. area. He graduated from Kinsley High School in 1931. He was married to Augusta Pfeifer on Nov. 26, 1936, in Topeka. She died on June 4, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a great- granddaughter, Alaina Margaret Meikel. Joseph was born March 23, 1912, in Topeka, the son of Anton and Margaret Geist Heit, and was reared on a farm in the Kinsley- Offerle, Kan. area. He graduated from Kinsley High School in 1931. He was married to Augusta Pfeifer on Nov. 26, 1936, in Topeka. She died on June 4, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a great- granddaughter, Alaina Margaret Meikel. He was employed by Santa Fe Railway for 34 years, he served his apprenticeship as a freight carman, then was promoted to draftsman in the engineer and car construction office. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, serving two years as Grand Knight of the 2608 Council, he was also a Forth Degree member of the James W. Gibbons Assembly. He was a member of the Topeka Engineers Club, the Topeka Genealogical Society, the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society and the Santa Fe Old Timers Club. Survivors include three sons, James and Francis Heit, both of Topeka, and Bernard Heit, Overland Park; one daughter, Mary Ann Heit, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Paul Heit, Kinsley; a sister, Mary Werner, Dodge City; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Heit will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, with a parish rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2608 rosary and Fourth Degree Chalice Ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Elevator Fund, 227 S.W.
