Description	:	Sally May Roberts, daughter of James Valentine and Eleanor Wallace LaPorte Roberts, was born Dec. 5, 1870, on a farm near Thurman, Iowa. She passed from this life at the Decatur county hospital, Leon, Wednesday evening, July 8, 1959, after a short illness. At the time of her passing, she was 88 years, 7 months, and 5 days of age. Read More	Sally May Roberts, daughter of James Valentine and Eleanor Wallace LaPorte Roberts, was born Dec. 5, 1870, on a farm near Thurman, Iowa. She passed from this life at the Decatur county hospital, Leon, Wednesday evening, July 8, 1959, after a short illness. At the time of her passing, she was 88 years, 7 months, and 5 days of age. She was the youngest daughter of a family of 15 children, all of whom have preceded her in death. She lived with her parents on the farm where she was born until her marriage to Edward Roberts, Dec. 31, 1895. They started housekeeping on their own farm near Douglas, Neb. While living on this farm their two oldest children were born. In 1898, the family moved to a farm near Tabor, Iowa, where they resided 17 years. While living there, two more children were born. In 1916 they moved to a farm two miles south of Lamoni, where their third child, Eugene LaPorte, died on Thanksgiving day, at the age of 17 as a result of a football injury. In the spring of 1918, the family moved to their home on North Clark street where Mr. and Mrs. Roberts lived nearly 40 years. In November 1957, together with their son, Paul and his wife, they moved into his new home on North Silver street. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in 1956, having lived together a little over 62 years at the time of Mr. Roberts' departure April 24, 1958. After moving to Lamoni she and her husband landscaped their own home. They were great lovers of nature and raised many flowers and shrubs which they shared with others in the community. Mrs. Roberts was one of the first members of the Lamoni Garden club and served as president for 25 years. During this time she was instrumental in securing a deed to the WaySide park and helped with its beautification. Mrs. Roberts is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Midgorden of Leon; her son, Paul, and daughter, Mrs. Wilber Prall, both of Lamoni; five grandsons, Gene Midgorden of West Des Moines, Glen Midgorden of Great Bend, Kan., Kent Midgorden of Des Moines, Jos. Midsorden., of Ankeny, and Wayne Prall of Moline, Ill. Mrs. Roberts' children and Midgorden grandsons, together with their companions and Wayne E. Pratt are present today. She also leaves 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many friends to mourn her departure. Her love for her garden is best expressed in the lines of her favorite poem by an unknown author: "A kiss of the sun for pardon The song of a bird for mirth, I am closer God's heart in a garden [One's nearer God's heart in a garden] Than anywhere else on earth."
