Son of Larkin James Moon and Luvisa Lemar OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 29, 1914 JOSEPH KINDER MOON On Thursday night, January 22nd, at the home of E. L. Moon, near Belinda, occurred the death of one of Marion county's pioneers, Joseph Kinder Moon. Mr. Moon had been in feeble health since last May, when an accident resulted in injury to one of his feet. Recently the trouble became more serious, culminating in his death. But, as the true soldier shrinks not from the battle neither did he shrink when face to face with the last enemy of man. He was the son of Larkin and Luvisa Moon, born in Orange county, Indiana, September 21st, 1846. Two years later his parents removed to Iowa and selected as a site for their home, the southern part of Marion county. Here Kinder grew to manhood. When the Civil War broke out he volunteered his services in the Forty-seventh Iowa and bravely bore a soldier's part until sickness prevented further service. On November 26th, 1868, he was married to Martha J. Wood, and on April 4th of the following year, together they united with what was then the Columbia congregation of the Church of Christ. Their marriage was blessed with eight children, seven of whom are still living, the eldest son, Asbury, having died in 1896. The living are Mrs. Gilla McCollough of Blackfalds, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Minnie Rooker, Mrs. Mae McCliman and Orin Moon, of California; Elmer, Dell and Walter, of Belinda, all of whom were present at the funeral excepting Mrs. McCliman. The wife and mother, the loved companion of so many years of toil, of sorrows and of joys, passed away on August 13th, 1903, since which time Mr. Moon has made his home with his sons, Elmer and Walter. Of his father's family there are now left two sisters to mourn the death of an only brother, Mrs. Matilda Reynolds and Miss Lydia Moon, of Kansas City. He was a man of clean habits, unpretentious, and ever ready for the work that lay next at hand. He was among the earlier settlers of Marion county, and as such had known hardships incident to the work of those who blazed the way for the present generation. On Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, funeral services were held at the Belinda church, conducted by S. H. Hedrix, of Allerton.
