Their father died in January 1845. ----- The Weekly Kansas Chief (Troy, Kansas), Thursday, 6 November 1884 On Saturday last, Joseph Langan and Wm. M. Ege died from the effects of tincture of aconite, taken by mistake for Stoughton bitters. The two men, with Edward Whorton, went into Hahn’s saloon, and called for drinks and some bitters. It was set out to them, and through mistake, they got the aconite, which Mr. Hahn had purhcased in Atchison, for rheumatism. The bitters and aconite were on the bar together, and when set out it was not noticed until Mr. Langan and Mr. Ege were taken sick, and too late for antidotes to be of any benefit, and both died within a few minuted of each other. Mr. Langan supposed that he had a chill, and went to Mr. Bender’s to stay awhile, thinking he would get over it soon. He was got to bed and a physician sent for, but too late to give relief and he died in a short time after he laid down. Mr. Ege felt very singular, and told Anton Brown that he felt very unwell, and would go back in the saloon, and thought he would soon feel better, but died before medical assistance could be had. Neither of these gentlemen had been drinking much, for the writer saw and conversed with both of them, and it was not noticeable that they had been drinking. We say this because some persons say they were drinking to excess, which is not a fact. As the Coroner could not be found, the Sheriff took the responsibility, and authorized Justice Leak to summon a jury, as Wm. Ege died without medical aid and alone, and it was necessary to hold an inquest in his case. Quite a number of witnesses were examined, and the jury returned a verdict that the death of Mr. Ege was caused by an overdose of aconite, taken by mistake, at the saloon of Fred. Hahn. Jos. Langan was buried in Atchison, by his Catholic friends, a large number attending him to his last resting place. Joe, as we always called him, was loved and respected by all his acquaintances. Mr. Ege leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. We have known him these many years, and always found him an upright gentleman, kind to his friends and to those with whom he associated. He was buried with Masonic honors, in the Doniphan cemetery.
