Description	:	Joseph Lukens, son of Hannah (née Thompson) and Peter Lukens, was born in 1825 in near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, where his parents were members of the Hopewell Friends Monthly Meeting in the northern part of the county. Joseph was named after his father's brother. The Lukens family moved in 1838 to Bellville, Jefferson Township, Richland County, Ohio, and in 1840 were enumerated in neighboring Berlin Township, Knox County, Ohio. The Lukens family moved in 1838 to Bellville, Jefferson Township, Richland County, Ohio, and in 1840 were enumerated in neighboring Berlin Township, Knox County, Ohio. Joseph Lukens and Miss Arminda Painter were married on 16 April 1848 in Jefferson Township, Richland County. (The ceremony was performed by Jefferson Township Justice of the Peace Robert Sites.) Arminda Painter also came from a Quaker family, and the bride and groom were third cousins. Joseph's younger brother William was enumerated in 1850 Joseph's household, and William would later that year marry Arminda's younger sister Charity Ann. Joseph and Arminda Lukens were the parents of five children, born in Richland County, where Joseph worked as cooper and farmer. The Lukens family in 1863 moved to Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa, and farmed there until at least 1885. In 1895, the couple were enumerated in the county's Lynn Grove Township. Obit. of Joseph Lukens— "Another one of Jasper County's old and respected citizens—Mr. Joseph Lukens—has passed away. His death occurred last Thursday, March 24th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. L. [Elnora Lukens] Turner in Buena Vista Township—aged 73 years, 1 month and 29 days. A stroke of paralysis, four or five years ago, so shattered father Lukens' previously strong constitution, that with his weight of years, he was unable to rally from it, and his decline, though slow, was sure and steady, and death came as a sweet release from long suffering. His aged companion with whom he had traveled life's journey for nearly a half century, passed away about two years ago, leaving him to finish his earthly pilgrimage alone. "He was born in Winchester, Va., Jan. 25, 1825, but when a child his parents moved to Belleville [Bellville, Richland Co.], Ohio. In 1848 he was married to Miss Arminda Painter, and in 1863 they came to Jasper county and settled in Elk Creek township. He was well known throughout the southeastern part of the county, where his kindly nature and christian deportment won for him the esteem of everybody. He was raised a Quaker, but some fifteen years ago untied with the Protestant Methodist church. He leaves four children—Chas. S. Lukens of Des Moines, Dr. C. J. Lukens of Oskaloosa, Mrs. L. A [Samantha] Blackwood of this city and Mrs. E. L. [Elnora] Turner of Buena Vista township—all of whom were at the bedside of their aged father, ministering to his wants, when death claimed him. "Funeral services were held on Sunday at Mt. Zion M. E. church, conducted by Rev. Jas. Kirkwood, pastor of P. M. church of Hixson Grove, and the remains were laid to rest in Palo Alto cemetery." Joseph and Arminda Lukens identified "Friends" as their religious affiliation in the 1895 state census, but are not known to have been members of a Quaker meeting in Jasper County. Their decision to move there may have been influenced by the settlement there of Quakers from Tennessee and North Carolina beginning in the 1840s. Notes Peter Lukens m. Hannah Thompson. On 5 Jul 1838, Peter, Hannah, and children Mary Ann, Lydia, Joseph, William, and Martha Elizabeth granted a certificate from Hopewell MM to Alum Creek Meeting at Owl Creek, Morrow Co., Ohio. (Jill J.
