Description	:	Arminda Painter, eleventh of the twelve children of John Painter and his second wife Rachel (née Redd), was born in 1829 and grew up on the Painter family farm in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio. Miss Arminda Painter and Mr. Joseph Lukens were married on 16 April 1848 in Jefferson Township, Richland County. Miss Arminda Painter and Mr. Joseph Lukens were married on 16 April 1848 in Jefferson Township, Richland County. Arminda's first cousin, Beulah Painter, had married Joseph's uncle, Jesse Lukens, in 1825, and Arminda's younger sister, Charity Ann, would marry Joseph's younger brother, William T. Lukens, in 1850. Arminda and Joseph Lukens lived in Perry and Jefferson Townships, where Joseph worked as a cooper and farmer, and where their five children were born. (The eldest died in childhood.) In 1863, the family moved to Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa, and farmed there at least until 1885. Arminda and Joseph Lukens in 1895 were enumerated in the county's Lynn Grove Township. Arminda Lukens died in 1896 in Killduff, a village in the county's Buena Vista Township, and was buried in that township's Mount Zion Cemetery. Notes The Painter family farm in the southeast corner of Perry Township bordered Jefferson Township to the east, and Knox County's Middlebury Township to the south. John Painter entered his land in 1814. John and Rachel Painter were enumerated in Perry Township from 1820 to 1860. "This is to certify that I have Solemnized the Marriage of Mr. Joseph Lukins and Miss Arminda Painter this 16th day of April A.D. 1848 [signed] Robert Sites J P" ("Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1994," index and images, FamilySearch (accessed 18 Nov 2013), Richland Marriage records 1846-1852 vol 5.) Sites was a J.P. for Jefferson Twp. Note: On the printed text of the marriage license form, "sworn" is crossed out and "affirmed" is written in. Quaker practice is to affirm rather than to swear an oath—the latter being unnecessary for one who was always supposed to tell the truth. Arminda's death was not recorded in the county death register, nor does it appear to have been reported in the local newspaper, the Newton Record, Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa. This newspaper on 31 Jan 1896, under the title "Killduff" (a village in the county's Buena Vista Twp.), reported: "Grandpa Lukins has gone to Oskaloosa to make his home with his son: Dr. [Chanley J.] Lukins." The date of her death, 20 Jan 1896, inscribed on her grave marker, appears to be correct. Her husband's 31 Mar 1898 obit. in the same newspaper reported this his wife had "passed away about two years ago." Reviewed 1 January 2022.
