Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock in St. Joseph's church where the Rev. Father P.T. Lynch will celebrate requiem high mass. Burial will be in St Joseph cemetery. Pallbearers will be William Winnike, Frank Beiter, John P. Hess, J.J. Meyers, George O'Donnell, and George Kennebeck. Joseph M. Drees, son of John Andrew Drees and Clara Fliekar Drees was born in Boston, MA, Oct. 8, 1847, one of six children. Mrs. Clara Manneman of Mount Carmel is now the only survivor. He was educated and grew to manhood in Boston where he joined the third United States cavalry & served as one of the bodyguards of General Custer in the Indian wars. After five years of service he was honorably discharged in 1873 and came to Carroll county, locating at Mount Carmel, and for some time managed a general store there for his mother. He was among those who built the first Catholic church (St Mary's) at Mount Carmel and the priest's house. In that church he was married April 6, 1875 to Johanna A. Kniest, by the late Rev. Father Joseph Kuemper, who later became pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul's church and was instrumental in building St. Anthony hospital, the schools, and priest house of Ss. Peter and Paul's parish, and the Holy Family church at Lidderdale. After his mother disposed of the store at Mount Carmel, Mr. Drees came to Carroll in 1879, the year of the great fire. He settled on North Court street, which has been the home for more than 50 years with the exception of two years, which he spent with his wife for the benefit of her health in Denver, Colo., where she died April 11, 1895, and was buried. Mr. Drees entered the office of O.H. Manning, afterward lieutenant governor of Iowa, where be studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1870 and was still practicing two years ago at the age of 82. He served as Justice of the Peace for 20 years and resigned in 1915 when he was made postmaster, which office he held for six and one-half years, retiring when Warren G. Harding became president. He was a member of the city council and introduced the first ordinance for the city waterworks for which he obtained a rerating of the town and finally secured the passage of the bill. Mr. Drees helped organize the first democratic party in Carroll in 1874 and was chairman of the democratic county central committee for 20 years. He was a devout member of St. Joseph's church of which he had been secretary for more than 50 years and was still serving at the time of his death. Besides his sister, Mrs. Manneman of Mt. Carmel, Mr. Drees is survived by two daughters and five sons: Miss Clara Drees; T. Jerry Drees, John A. Drees, Dr. Lambert T. Drees and Andrew A. Drees, all of Carroll; Frank V. Drees of Melstone, MN., and Mrs. M.L. O'Connor (Agnes) of Lake City. He also leaves 12 grandchildren. A son, Leo, and a daughter, Mary, died in childhood. In 35 years Mr. Drees had only been in bed three days. He had been able to sit in his chair but the last time he was downtown was last June and the following October was the last time he was able to attend services in the church to which he was devoted. He has been assiduously cared for since the death of his wife, by his daughter. Miss Clara Drees, who consecrated her life to her father. He died well fortified with the rites of the church. He is mourned by the community as well as his fine family of sons and daughters.
