He married Mary Dolan on Oct 14, 1874 in Boston, MA. They were the parents of Frank H, Margaret J., Mary Alice, and Gertrude. Bernard was a copper smith. March 5, 1925 - Carroll Times - Bernard H. Drees of Carroll, one of our well known older citizens, was born in Boston, Mass., the hub of the universe under the shadow of Fanuel hall, the cradle ot liberty, 83 years ago. In 1857 he emigrated to Dubuque, Ia., and in 1876 came to Carroll county. For a long term of years Barney Drees was identified with the business interests of Carroll and today he is one of the best preserved men of his age in the whole country. His life history is full of interesting adventures, and many of his legion of friends are hopeful that he will sooner or later furnish The Times with the details of some of these. Carroll Daily Herald - Tuesday, September 9, 1930 - B.H. Drees, a pioneer resident of Carroll, died suddenly in the early hours this morning in his home on North Court street from heart trouble. For over a year he had been afflicted with enlargement of the heart and hardening of the arteries and was subjected to bad attacks from which he soon recovered. Last evening about 7 he became violently ill but as usual seemed to get better and later went to bed but the attack returned and he died at 2 this morning. The hour and place of the funeral have not yet been determined a waiting the early arrival of relatives but it will take place Friday morning and burial will be made by the side of his son Frank Drees in the city cemetery. Bernard H Drees was born May 9, 1842 in Boston, MA and received his early education in the catholic schools there and in Cambridge. He was the son of John Andrew Drees, a copper smith who brought his family to Iowa and settled in Dubuque in 1857. After reaching manhood Mr Drees returned east where the wages were higher and continued his occupation as a copper smith in Portland, ME. On Oct 14, 1874 he married Miss Mary A Dolan, the ceremony being performed in the Cathedral at Portland, where they made their home for a time, later going to Dubuque and eventually to Carroll. Four children were born to this union: Alice, Mrs C.L. Glarum of Minneapolis; Gertrude, Mrs G.W. Korte of Seattle, WA; Frank Drees, who died May 29, 1911; Pearl, Mrs Anthony J James of Chicago. Besides his wife and three daughters, Mr Drees is survived by his brother, Joseph M Drees of Carroll and a sister, Mrs Clara Mannemann of Breda. After the death of his father heeding the slogan "Go West, young man and grow up with the country: Mr Drees returned with his family to Dubuque and with his brother, Andrew Drees, took over the copper smith and plumbing business of his father and remained in that city 4 years removing to Carroll about 1879 where he devoted the remaining part of his time to the real estate business. He served as city marshal under the late Dr Kessler, who was mayor of the city. Mr Drees was a striking figure and always look the picture of health in spite of his 98 years. In his early life he was an athlete, skilled in rowing and sculling, having received his training under Walter Brown at that time the worlds champion. He was a great sportsman and spent a good deal of time fishing and hunting wild game. He delighted in good books and was an inveterate reader. Mr and Mrs Drees attended the same school in Portland and took music lessons of the same teacher. Both possessed excellent voices, Mr Drees being a baritone and only a few evenings ago they sang one of their old favorite duets, "Larboard Watch", together. He was a typical easterner and never lost his accent, when asked where he was born he would proudly reply "In Boston, the Hub of the Universe and within the sight of old Faneuil hall". His son-in-law and daughter, Commander and Mrs Anthony J James of Chicago and his grandson and wife, Mr and Mrs Chauncey B Cook of Minneapolis, MN have sent word of their arrival this evening.
