The Pawtucket Gazette and Chronicle 12/10/1886 page 2 ********************************************************************* Monitor Fire Engine Company- At the annual meeting of the Monitor Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1, held on Monday evening last, the following named officers were re-elected for the coming year.: Foreman-Joseph McQuiston Assistant Foreman- Samuel Bensley Treasurer- James M. Crawford After the business of the meeting had been completed, the Clerk in behalf of the company, presented Capt. McQuiston with a beautiful silver ice pitcher. In a few well chosen words the latter thanked the company for the "surprise" gift". The supper of the Monitor Company, on Friday evening last, was a very pleasant affair, and the firemen and their friends were well represented. The company had recently refitted and newly furnished their hall, which was formally dedicated to the purpose for which it was designed, on the evening mentioned. *******************************************************************A Great Success~~The fair and ball of the Rough and Ready Company last week were as successful things of the kind as were ever known in Pawtucket. On the fair evenings the hall was densely crowded, and large members were unable to get in. The ball on Friday evening was attended by four bhundred couples, and both Armory and Battery Hall and twenty pieces of music were put in requisition to accommodate them. The company must be satisfied that they have some friends. The results of the drawing at the close of the fair were, we learn, as follows: The pianoforte was drawn by the company; the sewing machines by Miss Begley; silver tea set by Dr. Loring; cook stove by Mr. Samuel Foster; and the hand engine by Samuel Manning. In the contest for the silver speaking trumpet to be presented to the most popular captain of an engine, the whole number of votes cast was 1139. Capt. McQuiston of Monitor No. 1 recieving 394, was presented with the trumpet. The profits of the fair will add $1200. to the treasury of the department.
