Description	:	Mrs. Julia A. McQuiston, widow of Joseph McQuiston and one of the oldest residents of this city, died at her residence, 56 Capital Street, yesterday, aged 81. She was born in Pawtucket, and was formerly very active in it's social affairs. She was know to nearly all of the older residents of the city as a fine type of the American gentlewoman, and her house was often the scene of social gatherings numbering some of the most prominent people of this section of the state. McQuiston, widow of Joseph McQuiston and one of the oldest residents of this city, died at her residence, 56 Capital Street, yesterday, aged 81. She was born in Pawtucket, and was formerly very active in it's social affairs. She was know to nearly all of the older residents of the city as a fine type of the American gentlewoman, and her house was often the scene of social gatherings numbering some of the most prominent people of this section of the state. Two daughters , Mrs. William J. Arnold, 56 Mason Street, and Mrs. Caroline "Carrie" Rounds, 56 Capital Street, and son, Joseph Everett McQuiston; Winthrop Street, survive her. Others who survive her are nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, the latter being children of Harry Hamilton of Hamilton & Hamilton chainmakers, of Providence, and Harry Bitas, superintendent of the Coleman Nall Company, Edward Howland, master mechanic of the Phillips Wire Works, William Hamilton of Hamilton & Hamilton Chainmakers of Providence, and Abram Glidden, machinist at the Phillips Wire Works. Two brothers, George W. Slade and Lyman Slade also survive her. She was the daughter of Martin & Hannah (Nickerson) Slade, and her father assisted in interring the first bodies placed in Oak Grove Cemetery. Her son Joseph Everett McQuiston ; a well know machinist of this city. The funeral will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock when there will be services from the Park Place Church. Published in the Pawtucket Times 1/4/1905 Mystery Solved. A week ago there appeared in the Times an item about the Daggett House. It said the old organ in the house given in memory of Mrs. Julia McQuiston, was a mystery to members of the D A R. The mystery has been solved . Mrs. Cora Glidden of Mulberry Street and her sister, Mrs. Lena Salisbury have a story to tell about the organ. They were grand daughters of Mrs. Julia McQuiston. As far back as they can remember the organ had belonged to their grandmother. The McQuiston's were the second family to settle in Pawtucket Mrs. Glidden believes. When young Julia Slade came to Pawtucket from Cape Cod as Joseph McQuiston's bride. In March 1842 she lived in a little house on Water Street. Joseph was a captain of the Water street fire department. Julia had in her house a mahogany bookcase and, when the family moved to a larger house at 51 Capital street, the bookcase was taken along. George McQuiston, a nephew of Joseph, thought the bookcase might be put to better use. He had organ parts set into the frame and an organ was brought home to Mrs. McQuiston. She made a screen for it and placed it in the living room. From that time on the organ played its part in the family's life. Mrs. Glidden, who is 72, remembers that she and her sisters, Julia, Carrie, and Lena, would as children listen for hours while their grandmother sang such songs as "I Dream I Dwelt in Marble Halls". While she sang and played she would pump the pedal of the organ vigorously. Uncle George, as he was called by the family, appointed himself guardian of the organ. When it needed polishing, tuning, or repairing, Uncle George did it. In the coarse of an active life the original keyboard had chipped and yellowed and it was replaced with a new one. The screen grandma had made also became torn and dirty with the years, so she sewed a new one of dark red material. The same screen is on today. After Mrs. McQuiston's death the family decided to give the organ to an historical society. The D. A. R. received it from Mrs. Glidden and Mrs.Julia Howland, grand daughter of Julia, and from their father Joseph,, who was Julia's son. although no one plays the old organ now, visitors to the Daggett House can at least be satisfied with the knowledge that once it belonged to a Pawtucket family who got from it a full measure of enjoyment. ~~~Published in the Pawtucket Times 7/7/1944~~~
