Description	:	Joseph R. Ponessa, 79, a lifetime resident of the Custer-Big Horn area, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, after a long struggle with ill health. He was born in Big Horn to Italian immigrant parents, Joseph Peter and Angela Maria (Bruno) Ponessa, on Jan. 28, 1927. Ponessa, 79, a lifetime resident of the Custer-Big Horn area, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, after a long struggle with ill health. He was born in Big Horn to Italian immigrant parents, Joseph Peter and Angela Maria (Bruno) Ponessa, on Jan. 28, 1927. He was a lifetime member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Custer, where he was baptized. He attended Big Horn and Custer schools. When he was 16 years old his father passed away, and he had to assume responsibility for the family farm, which remained his main occupation throughout his life. He cared for his mother the last four decades of her life. In 1956 and 1957 he was one of the top 10 sugar beet growers in Montana. On Aug. 2, 1947, he married Mary Bernadette Feeley. He played the accordion, belonged to the Fiddlers Association and could sing and play hundreds of songs on request in both English and Italian. On Aug. 3, his car broke down several miles from home in the middle of the night and he had to walk back. Because of his health, the strain proved to be too much for him, and he began to decline. He passsed away at St Vincent Healthcare. Survivors include his wife; three children, the Rev. Joseph Lawrence Ponessa of Glendive, Russell George Ponessa of Miles City and Jacqueline Ann Edwards of Hardin; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary McCormick of Laurel, Dorothy Moerkerke of Billings and Rose Grammens of Waco. Rosary was recited at St. Joseph's Church in Hardin on Aug. 29. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph;s on Aug. 30. Interment was in the family plot in the Custer Cemetery. Arrangements were in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel of Hardin. Memorials may be made to St Mary's Church in Custer.
