Philip and James Catholic Church History, Pages 80-81 JOSEPH AND ELIZABETH (TIGGES) SCHROEDER FAMILY Joe Schroeder was born May 14, 1874 in Amsburg, Germany to Heinrich and Bernadine (Grainer) Schroeder and came to America in 1880. He grew to manhood on the family farm northeast of Bow Valley. Elizabeth was born February 13, 1884, the oldest of the five children of John and Mary (Arens) Tigges. She was crowned queen of the Schuetzenfest in July of 1901. The king was Frank Rabe. Joe and Elizabeth were the last couple to be married in the old SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church in Bow Valley. The day was November 22, 1904. It rained so hard the day of their wedding that the festivities planned to be held at the bride's parents home, five miles southwest of Bow Valley along the West Bow creek, were moved to the John Stevens home, just southeast of the church in Bow Valley. Mrs. Stevens, a cousin of the bride, baked and frosted a wedding cake and displayed it on a decorated cream can, while the men traveled with horsea and wagon to the Tigges home to get the other food. Their generosity will never be forgotten. Joe and Elizabeth settled on a farm about 4 1/2 miles southeast of St. James. They were among the first members of the SS. Phillip and James parish when it was founded. They were the parents of four boys. Joe died on January 24, 1922, seventeen years after they were married. Elizabeth was a seamstress, which helped provide for her family. She stayed on the farm with her four sons. Hugo married Irene Mallan. Rudolph married Bernice Mathers. When Clarence and Mary Dietsch were married, Elizabeth and Ralph moved to another farm. In 1941 they moved to the "Mike Dempsey farm" about a half mile east of the SS. Philip and James church. Ralph died on November 23, 1948. Elizabeth found employment in the sewing department of Sacred Heart Hospital at Yankton, South Dakota. If you or any of your children were born during the 1950's, the first garment you wore was most likely sewn by "Lizzie." She retired in 1965, to again become an active member of the SS. Philip and James parish, living close by the church of her faith, so dear to her, where she could attend daily Mass. Also dear to her were her 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth died July 31, 1971 and was laid to rest in the St. James cemetery next to her son, Ralph.
