Interment was in St. Rose cemetery. Rev. Spenner of Laurel, nephew of the deceased was celebrant of the Mass. Rev. Grobbels of Crofton, Deacon, Rev. Vanderlaan of Fordyce, Sub-deacon and Rev. Hoesing, ceremonist. Clarence Rupiper, Leonard Rupiper, Mac Goebel, Nick Arens, Henry Gentrap Sand Allen Foxhoven, all nephews of the deceased were pallbearers. Six of the grandchildren, Lilian and Kathryn Haight, Russel and Gerald Evans, Carol Ann and Billy Spencer were flower bearers. Mr. Spenner has not enjoyed good health since 1927 when he sustained a serious back injury while working for the Chicago, St. Paul Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad, which caused permanent disability. He spent the past year and a half in bed. Joseph Spenner, Sr., son of Ignatz and Wilhelmina Spenner, was born in Haaren, Westphalia, Germany, July 23, 1863, and died at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 20 days. He came to America at the age of 23 and settled in Clearwater, Neb. Joseph Spenner was united in marriage to Kathryn Rupiper, August 29, 1895. The couple homesteaded in Naper, Nebr., until 1898 when they moved to Cedar County. They came to Crofton in 1909. Mr. Spenner was employed by the C., St. Paul. M. and O. Ry. from 1913 until his injury. The couple would have celebrated their Golden Wedding in August. His widow Kathryn and seven children survive to mourn his passing. John of Crofton, Ignatz of Wakefield, William of Sioux City, Joseph Jr. of Yankton, Mrs. A. L. Evans of Omaha and Mrs. Howard Guest of Sacramento, Calif. A son Henry preceded him in death in 1904. Ten grandchildren are also left to mourn his passing. One grandchild, Richard L. Evans was unable to attend the funeral as he is serving his country in the U.S. Marines. He is also survived by a brother, Anton of Rapid City, S. D., who was unable to attend the funeral due to illness. A brother and sister preceded him in death. Mr. Spenner was a generous home-loving and religious husband and father, and preferred the simple things in life. Prior to his injury he made his hobby gardening and flowers. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral besides all of his children were Mrs. Henry Genthrup of West Point, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Arens, Spencer, Nebr., Mr. Henry Rupiper, Fordyce, Mr. and Mrs. Al Schaefer, Omaha, Clarence Rupiper, Fordyce, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Rupiper, Hartington, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Becker, Hartington, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Kathol, Hartington, and Miss Elizabeth Rupiper, Yankton, S. D.
