Wife was Marie Skala Srb. Three of there sons were medical doctors and they were Dr. Joseph J. Srb of Dwight, Dr. Adolph Srb of Omaha, and Dr. Gilbert Srb of Dodge. _____________ A few Srb stories which I, Jack Hultquist, believe are basically true. In reading other articles you will note that Joe Srb (1859 - 1922) and family played at several funerals, dances, and also composed a little music. In the past I had heard this Srb story but I mainly got a written copy from Gwen Srb Stirek (per Ardath Srb) about Joe Srb and his love for music. (I had heard the story as something that happen in the 1880s when Joe was young, maybe not yet married, and on the farm.) Joe needed shoes so he walked several miles to town to purchase new shoes. While in town he saw a flute for sale. It had always been his lifelong dream to play the flute, and seeing it for sale he realized he must own that flute. On the way home he was so eager to begin playing the flute that he tied the laces of the new shoes together and placed the shoes around his neck; this freed up his hands for learning the flute. On that long walk home he taught himself how to play the flute. _____ In the 1980s Hannah Srb Hultquist was hospitalized about once every three years. On one occasion in the Kearney, Nebraska hospital she had an elderly lady for a roommate that turned out to have been raised in eastern Nebraska and in the Dodge area. She knew the Srb family not real well but she had heard their music, had heard much about the music, and knew a few stories about them. I would believe this story occurred between 1900 –1905 before autos and while everything moved slowly. Joe Srb and sons were coming back from some playing engagement and one of them needed badly to go to the restroom. That person got off the wagon and did his thing. About then another wagon then came up the hill from the other direction. As the other wagon slowly passed at 4 – 6 mph it was observed that the Srb Brothers had gotten their instruments out and were out seriously serenading the "pile" with an appropriate composition. (Probably one of the good Srb funeral dirges.) The hospitalized woman also had other stories and maybe these next two stories came from her. Sometimes the Srbs on their way to or way home from a playing engagement would practice while seated in the wagon as the horses made their way home at 4 mph. I think it was the hospitalized woman's father or grandfather that was behind his horse(s) out in the field plowing or mowing when he heard the Srb music getting closer. Anyway as the music got closer he started paying more attention to the music than to his farming and his plowed furrow or mowed hay was no longer in a straight line. Maybe it was this hospitalized ladies male relative that told this story. Anyway the male person telling the story had gone to Howells to school. He had great respect for doing pranks, and for Superintendent (Jerome) Srb. I guess a couple times he got called into Jerome's office. He said that Superintendent (Jerome) Srb could just look at you as you sat there and you would melt because you knew you were in deep trouble and better straighten up. I guess Jerome really knew psychology for teenagers. _____ I, Jack Hultquist, was raised at Minden, Nebraska which is about half the state away from Dodge, Dwight, and Omaha. In the 1960s and 1970s I traveled a lot. When I would get to know people and mentioned my mother was Czech, and maiden name Srb, no vowels, many times, even in CA, people with Nebraska connections would say they knew or had heard of Dr. Srb. They would be surprised when I would say the Dr. Srb in Omaha, Dwight, or Dodge? I would tell them they were all brothers. I always found it interesting how within the Srb family if somebody said Doc or wrote Doc it was understood that was Adolph even though there were three Dr. Srbs. _____ Dodge Criterion, June 18, 1909 . Miss Pearl Wormwood was a Rogers visiter Saturday. July 9, 1909 . Adolph Schlosser and Dr Smersh and E. J. Popelar went to Colorado. . Dr. O. G. Smersh resided with John Longacre (Ferne's father) E. Poplar Popelar went with Dr. Smersh to Colorado to locate some real estate. [I wonder if Dr. Smersh influenced Adolph and J. J. toward becoming doctors?] . Srb Bros (Joe and Frank) sold Old Reliable Singer Sewing Machines July 16, 1909 . Mrs. Will Kovar came down from Howells Monday to visit her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Srb. August 20, 1909 . Miss Ferne Longacre left Tuesday for Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. and Mrs. Smersh are going there in a month or so to make their home and Miss Ferne will stay with them. She goes now so as to enter school at the beginning. (Miss Ferne Longacre was the first Mrs. Adolph Srb. She died during the flu epidemic and is buried in Glencoe. She had a lot going for her.) September 2, 1909 . Prof Jerome Srb has gone to Dwight to resume his duties as principal of the schools for another term. . Prof J. J. Srb begins his duties as principal of the Brainard school next Monday. (Later J. J. married Agnes Sabata of Dwight and was a Dr. at Dwight.) December 30, 1909 . Emil Popelar and Dr. Smersh both at Fort Collins. September 8, 1910 . A pioneer gone, Frank Srb September 15, 1910 . Resolution to Jos and F. J. on their fathers death. Sept 29, 1910 .
