Read More	Odebolt Chronicle - September 26, 1935 DEATH CLAIMS JOSEPH THIES SATURDAY EVE Resident Here for Many Years; Funeral at St. Martin's Tuesday – Joseph Thies, one of the substantial residents of the community and this township, whose serious illness was reported last week, passed away at his home three miles northwest of town at 10 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 21. In his younger days Mr. Thies suffered much with asthma, and was obliged to spend some time in South Dakota for relief. He regained his health later, and until recently has been in fair health most of the time. This past summer he has not been well, but was around all of the time until the last two weeks, when dropsy and heart trouble, with asthma, developed rapidly, and nothing could be done for him. Memorial services were held at St. Martin's church at 9:30 a. m. Thursday, with Rev. Father A. G. Schaefer in charge of the service. He was laid to rest in St. Martin's cemetery, with H. C. Sommers, John Henrich, Jos Ziegmann, J. R. Konradi, P. J. Gronmeyer, and Barney Hazelfoff acting as bearers. Joseph Thies, one of a family of 10 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Thies, Sr., was born at Sublette, Ill., Oct. 28, 1873. At his death he had reached the age of 61 years, 10 months, and 24 days. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1878, when four years old, coming on a freight train, and across the prairie to the farm in the township, which his father had bought five years before. He grew to manhood on the home farm and Feb. 5, 1901, was united in marriage with Anna Feltes, who has been his faithful companion for more than 34 years. They resided on a farm near Early for two years, and north of Odebolt four years before buying the farm which has been the family home for 29 years, and where the family has been reared. Mr. Thies had many hardships to overcome in the first years of his married life, both as to health and the time of that day. He was obliged to rent out part of the farm until his boys were old enough to carry on for him. He was a member of St. Martin's church and an esteemed member of the church committee. Also a member of the K. of C. Gonzaga Council. He was a good husband and father, and his family is greatly bereaved. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn, Nick, Mary (Mrs. W. Lunkenheimer), Odebolt, Frank, Louis, and Bernard, at home, though Frank is farming to Cook Township. Two children passed before, Margaret Anna, who died April 4, 1918, when small, and William, Jan. 29, 1924. He leaves also, two grandchildren, three brothers, Nick and John of Arthur, and Peter of Lane, S. D., and four sisters, Kate (Mrs. Joe Konrady) of Odebolt; Lizzie (Mrs. John Konrady) of Henry, S. D.; Rena of Henry, and Elnora, who resides in Kansas. The family has the sympathy of their friends in this bereavement. Relatives from away who came for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bauer of Carroll, Mrs. Jake Bauer of Hartley; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Konradi of Kiron; Mrs. And Mrs. Joe Miller and Frank Roeder of Schaller; Mr. and Mrs. Barney Albers and Mr. and Mrs. John Corzillus of Cherokee, and George Koetz and family of Danbury. Among the friends from other towns were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buggee of Lake View, and the Proost, Dick and Hedrick families of Schaller.
