(Page 6: Elizabeth fell through an opened hatch and broke her ankle.) As soon as it was prudent they left Albany, and went to Cambridge in a lumber waggon, forty miles. Mother and her two weeks old infant stood the journey better than they expected. After they reached their uncle's at Cambridge they rested a few days and soon began to gain strength, they called their baby boy Joseph, after Grandfather Langford. Like other infants he grew and was company for his brother (Robert) and sister (Margaret). When Baby Joe was about 18 months old a little baby sister (Elizabeth) was born at Cambridge (NY). 'Josey' was no longer the baby, they called him Joe or baby Joe. He might be able to walk but was delicate. I have no recollection of hearing from my parents, any thing special in Joseph's first seven years, only he never was as strong and healthy a child as the other children, and this is correct from what I knew about my brother in his boyhood or youthful years or at any period of his life. His liver and stomach seemed weak. This was a drawback in his success as a farmer without modern machinery. When the family moved to Ernestown Joseph was in his fourth year probably small for one of that age, 'Eliza' may have been as large. They had quite a family to care for and make as many moves before they found a settled home. My parents were young and healthy, and persevering, and God blessed their labours, with success, and they soon had a comfortable home for themselves, and their large family. THE LITTLE WAGON STORY: I well remember an event that took place between my brother an I in our boyhood. Joseph was very ingenious - to make play things he could, and did, make a hand sleigh for each of his brothers and sisters - they were easily made by him. I don't know his age at that time, he might be ten or twelve years. He next made a little waggon. The wheels may have been cut out of a plank. It had four wheels, a reach, two axle trees, and a tongue, and box we got many a ride on it. This piece of workmanship he prized very highly and we all did the same. But our dear Brother had a sever fit of sickness and soon expected to die so he divided his little treasures with his little brothers and sisters. To me he gave his prize waggon. I expect at that time, I valued it more than the maker but it happened that his sickness was not unto death. As soon as he got well he wanted back his little waggon but I claimed it was mine, that he gave it to me. My parents had to settle the waggon dispute and Joseph got back his waggon and I suppose I shed tears. This event shows the difference in disposition two brothers have. Joseph had a mild even temper, less covetous, not easily angered, was very obedient to his parents, kind to his brothers, a good business manager, honest and upright in all his dealings, not given to many bad habits, used no liquor or tobacco, and think a good student, a peacemaker charitable to the poor and needy, no idler nor busy body, and to crown all lived a pure consistent Christian Life but was greatly afflicted. A.D. 1836 REGENERATION OF THE SPIRIT - 26 A year or two before my father got unfit for business when Joseph was about 18 years of age, my Father got deranged, and Joe had much business affairs to manage, and he was inexperienced, but he soon understood his position, and at once rented out the Camden farms to tenants. We tilled more of our farm in Ernestown, sold the oxen bought a span of horses, cut some hay on shares, near home. Kept six of seven cows, our horses were two mares, did our work for a few years, raised some colts, but they got the habit of running away , and we parted with them, after few years. A.D. 1843 MADE A WISE CHOICE - 27 The next event I shall narrate in my brother's life was renting and buying a farm of 100 acres from an Alvin Dowling who got it by heirship. My brother and Dowling were near the same age, and unmarried they lived together a few years and kept a "Batch Hall" (A group of Batchelor's living together in a house!) This farm was about three miles from our house. After a while Dowling took a notion to keep from our house. After a while Dowling took a notion to keep a store but he lacked funds and sold his farm to Joseph in A.D. 1845. My brother had rented for a number of years. Dowling urged him to buy it on conditions that suited Joseph better than paying rent. It was called a good farm, had a good frame barn on it and log house and well fenced about this time Sister Margaret got married and Father took upon him again the management of his business. Joseph had managed it well for eight years and nw had to hand it over to Father whom we think was incapable to fill such a position. This caused a little friction for a while and a change in the family government. Joseph continued on the Dowling farm and getting it paid for, my Father dying in about two years, made other changes in the family. Joseph and I nursed him in his last illness - he died December 30th 1847. Joseph in a few days after my Father's death was taken down with a fever for several weeks, it might be "Typhoid". He was engaged to be married to a young woman. Hr name was Miss Jane Bower. She was born 5 April 1828 ("at Strathcona (formerly called Napanee Mills), Addington Co., Ontario.") Her person and family very respectable. As soon as he recovered from his illness he fulfilled his engagement, and got married Sunday, June 18, 1848. The Rev. G. Goodson officiated. She soon moved to her own house and she made my brother a good wife, and help mate for thirty three years - his last 15 years was as an invalid - or while he lived - we think quite happily and was the mother of nine children, Seven survive. 1906. J.T. A.D. 1851 THE DOWLING FARM DID NOT SUIT HIM- 28 My Brother remained on the Dowling farm after his marriage a year or more made some improvements but was not contented to make it his home. He first moved near Newburgh. He next moved to my brother Isaac's house on the old homestead, for a few months, and next into a house on my farm that was vacant. I think it was in 1853 (1854 crossed out) he bought the Lucas Farm of 200 acres the next lot to our homestead. It had good improvements. The Hon. John A. McDonald had the selling of this farm. To pay for it, my Brother sold the Dowling farm and the one my Father gave him in Camden. MY BROTHER DIED: My brother died whilst visiting his brother in Dresden, Ontario, on 25 Aug 1881, of Rheumatism. His last words being "I shall soon walk". He and Jane raised seven children. He rests at Old Switzer. JOSEPH'S FAMILY AFTER HIS DEATH: After his death in 1881, Jane and the children remained in Ontario, "residing in Lennox Co., where they remained until 1892. Removing to Melita, Manitoba, Sister Thompson lived there for fifteen years, and came to the city of Vancouver, four years ago (May 1907), where she became a member of the Mount Pleasant Church. As a small girl she had a bright, joyous experience and though retiring in disposition was one of those devoted souls whose whole thought and care is for the weal of the household of faith. Several sons and daughters survive to mourn the loss of one who was a noble tribute to Christian motherhood as well as a faithful exemplar of the church. In 1906 had lived in Melita, Manitoba, for many years then moved to Winnipeg with three of her daughters while her sons moved to Vancouver BC to improve the health and wealth of their family. In 1907, May, moved to British Columbia with her daughters & lives near her sons. In 1911 (Jane) died at home in Vancouver of paralysis. "
