Page 23 Chapter II Biography of Ten of My Parent's Children ROBERT . The first additon to my parent's family was a son born in Ireland on 26 July 1814. They called their baby boy Robert. This may have been an old family name for centuries. I had an Uncle and a cousin of that name. This event no doubt gave my parents joy and company. . He came in troublesome times. Great Britain was at war with France and the United States of America. In this year the first peace was signed with France and also with the United States. But, Napoleon in 1815 left the Island of Elba and recommenced the war with Britain. My father was a British soldier and wore a red coat at the time and belonged to the Irish militia for seven years, but their baby soldier boy was well cared and quiet. I was four years old when Robert died. I have no personal recollection of him but have a vague idea of his death and the many stories I heard of his good works. I think my brother Robert was of a mild, even temper, very thoughtful of his little brothers and sisters. . He was a good student; I don't think he went to school until the family moved to their Ernestown home. He would be then in his ninth year. The school house was about a mile east from our dwelling house. It was an old log structure and generally a large school So Robert may have attended this school three or four years as he was the eldest and my father was kept busy on the bench earning an honest living for his family and paying for this new home. Robert may have been kept home to help on the farm at times. REFLECTIONS ON MY BROTHER'S LIFE AND DEATH . My brother Robert is dead over seventy-seven years (1827). And like righteous Abel in Heb. Ch. 11, "He being dead his good actions live, and speaketh". God called him early from a state of trial and labour to reward. . He was in his fourteenth year. I think generally healthy. His illness only a few days or weeks. Some brain disease or fever took place on 7 Dec 1827. His funeral may have taken place on the 9th and his remains laid to rest, along side of his infant brother who had died two years before, in the old Switzer Chapel Cemetery. And a wooden dressed plank monument painted and inscribed with his obituary erected. (Marble or granite was not much used at the time). . I have seen an old cyphering book that Robert had filled at school with solution of sums in arithmetic. They were much used in schools when I went to school seventy (or eighty) years ago. I have reason to believe that my brother Robert's life was a moral and outwardly Christian one. No doubt he read his bible and think there was a Sunday school kept at the church and he may have attended. He was the second death in our family. We are not able to judge correct of those who die in their youthful years. We must leave them with the great Judge to decide. J.T.
