Read More	Body of Farmer, 46, Missing 4 Days, Found Under Snow Following a period of nearly four days, the body of Joseph V. Novotny, 46, widely known bachelor farmer living three miles east of Clutier, was found buried beneath the snow in the lane of his home last Saturday morning. He had last been seen in Clutier on the preceding Tuesday night, when he started to walk home in the face of a blinding snowstorm. Apparently he had suffered a heart attack when only a few yards from his house. Snow had covered his body, and had formed a solid crust of ice on top. A search for Novotny Thursday evening when Anton Kupka, a neighbor, reported that no smoke had been seen coming from Novotny’s chimney for two days. Fearing that he might have perished in the storm, but believing also that he might have gone to the home of some relative for a visit, residents of the community sought the missing man all day Friday. The body was found Saturday morning by Clarence Kearney, a brother-in-law, who noticed an unusual hump in the snow in a shallow ditch beside the lane leading from the road to Novotny’s house. Breaking through the ice crust with a stick, he was horrified to find Novotny’s frozen body lying face down in the ditch. Coroner Al J. Havlik, summoned from Tama, declared that death was due to natural causes and that no inquest was necessary. It is said that Novotny, who was an unusually large man, had previously suffered severe heart attacks. The last persons to see Novotny alive were probably Dan Kearney, local trucker, and two or three farmers who passed him on the road as he was walking home Tuesday night. One offered Mr. Novotny a ride, but the latter declined. It was the decedent’s custom to walk to and from town every day, and he often refused rides as he felt he would be imposing on his neighbors. Funeral services were held Monday morning, at 9 o clock at the home of a brother, Frank Novotny, west of Clutier, and at 10 o clock at St. Vaclav church, with the Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek in charge. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery. Casket bearers were Joe, Albert, John, and Frank Kriz, and Fred and Steve Zmolek. Flower bearers were a son and daughter of Vitus Novotny, and a son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hadacek. Joseph V. Novotny was a lifelong resident of this community, having been born in August 1889, on his parents home farm just west of Clutier. He was the oldest of eight children of Vaclav and Antonia Novotny, and the first to die. His father died about five years ago, and his mother about ten years ago, the latter also being a victim of a sudden heart attack. Surviving are three brothers and four sisters: Julia, wife of John Hadacek,; Anna, wife of L. F. Chalupnik; Vitus Novotny; Frances, wife of Fred Matthiesen Jr.; Vince Novotny, Frank Novotny, and Madalene, wife of Clarence Kearney. The decedent was a member of St. Joseph s society of the Catholic workmen lodge of St. Vaclav church, which lodge attended the funeral in a body.
