In France Sep 12, Bugler Clutier Farmer Experiences Narrow Escape From Death Vitus Novotny, 30-year-old farmer living northwest of Clutier, suffered serious injuries and narrowly escaped death in unusual fashion Thursday morning of last week. He has been in the St. Francis hospital in Waterloo since the accident, which occurred on the farm of his brother, Vince Novotny, Jr., one and one-half miles east of town. Vitus Novotny went to his brother s place to get a load of hay. He had loaded the hay rack and was standing in the yard talking to his father, holding the reins of the horses in his hands, when the animals became suddenly frightened by a piece of paper which was blown up in front of their eyes. Before he could jump aside, one of the horses had crushed him against a tree and a corner of the hayrack. The other horse ran away and was later found a mile or more from the farm. Novotny was hurriedly carried into his brother's home and a physician from Clutier was called. At first, he did not believe he was seriously hurt, but unfavorable symptoms caused the doctor to order his removal to the Waterloo hospital later in the day, the trip being made in the Boettcher ambulance from Traer. X-ray examinations at the hospital showed his pelvic bone to be fractured in five places, although not more than one of the breaks was severe. He was also suffering from a rupture of the abdominal wall. For a day or two Novotny s condition was quite critical, but since Sunday it has shown steady improvement and it is believed he will be able to leave the hospital within a few days. Although it may not be necessary to place his body in a cast to repair the fractures, he will be forced to remain bedfast for three weeks or longer and will probably not be able to do heavy work for several months.
