Departed this life, at his residence in this county on Thursday morning last, the 16th Joseph Weast Esq., in the 53rd year of his age. In hiring my pen to announce in this public manner the death of an esteemed friend, the slight in importance which attaches to notices of this kind, almost compels me to decline the melancholy duty which ardent firendship prompts, and to allow the silent tear, the smothered sigh, and the deeply wounded heart, silently to attest the merits of departed worth, but there are feelings of human nature, which despising the icy callousness of the world, will have vent in the unbidden impulses of the human soul. Such are the writer's feelings at this moment, in the contemplating the loss of a valued and highly esteemed friend. The deceased was one of our most worthy and enterprising citizens. From a life of industry, perserverance and unbending integrity, he rose from a very humble life to be a man of handsome property, and of considerable popular influence, as was frequently demonstrated by his fellow citizens. At the time the old Levy Court system was abolished, he was elected from his district to the first Board of County Commissioners. He was subsequently elected three times to a seat in the House of Delegates of Maryland; and at the time of his death, he held by appointment the important and responsible office of County Collector; in all of which offices he was prompt and faithful in the discharge of his duties; the unyielding friend of popular rights, and pure Republican principles. But alas! how frail and brief are all life's hopes and honors--how uncertain the tenure of all that earth can give! In the private relations of life--as of husband, father, neighbor, and friend--he had but few equals any where,--ever kind, obliging, and amiable; with a heart sesibly alive to every charity, and a hand eager to relieve, the poor and needy ofhis neighborhood will keenly feel his loss, whilst his immediate family and a large circle of friends and aquaintances will hold in fond remembrance thesocial qualities of his character.--But he has gone to that silent and solemn mansion from whence no traveller returns; and a friend who knew him well in nearly every situation of life, pays to him and his deeply afflicted family this small tribute of sincere regard.
