Popular because of his true Christian life, his kindness and thoughtfulness of others. Joseph William Hannah was born at Mahomit, Champaign county, IL, Jan. 21, 1852. He departed this life Aug. 23d, 1912, aged 60 years, 7 months and 2 days. He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Lyons, Jan. 21, 1875. To this union were born nine children, five boys and four girls, three of whom have gone before, two in infancy and Abner in early manhood. The six living are: Earl the youngest, at home J. E. Hannah, Nellie Barnes, Myrtle Lierman, Blanche Buckingham and Harry Hannah all of this vicinity. In the spring of 1883 he moved with his family from IL to Nebr. settling on the present sight of his home, two and one half miles north west of Beaver Crossing at that time an unbroken prairie, The virgin soil was converted into tillable ground, shade trees planted, also a large orchard, and many beautiful shrubs and roses from whose blooming fragrance the wife and children were made happy. He spared no pains or expense for the comfort of his family. He was converted and joined the M. E. church, at Shilok IL, in early manhood, and his life has been one long series of Christian deeds. He was a man of whom it could be said, "He did alms not to be seen by men" for all his life he was doing for others, often depriving himself to help someone who was in need. In sickness and sorrow he was not only willing but present to aid and comfort, and always in such a quiet and unassuming way, that, won the friendship of all. When death hovered near, he did not falter, but met death as he lived, a Christian. His going is certainly a severe shock to his family, and an in parable loss to the community, but his courageous Christian example and the evidence he gave will be an undying memory to all who knew him. He leaves beside his wife and children two brothers U. B. and A. L., three sisters, Mrs. Lyons, Mrs. Caldwell and Mrs. J. W. Morris, all of this community. The nine little grand children will always cherish the love of a devoted grandfather and remember in childish fancy the days spent "at grandpas." Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Stannard, Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church, and the largest funeral ever held in Beaver Crossing, and followed the remains to their last resting place, is the evidence of the host of friends that are left to mourn the loss of so good a man. The floral offerings were profuse and the church decorations beautiful. The choir sang beautifully, tho' saddened by the sorrow that hung over them, realizing one of the truest and best of the church was there for the last time.
