Joseph Wood Atkinson was born in Hoxbury (sic) Village, Canada, December 1, 1834. At the age of 17, he came to the United States. He settled in Wisconsin where he was engaged in the milling business for more than twenty years. September 6, 1864, he was married to Miss Mary L. Bradley, at Broadhead, Wis. Mrs. Atkinson died fourteen years ago. In 1871 he moved to Kansas, coming to Emporia to take a job as a miller in the Soden mill where he was employed until 1896, when he retired from active business life. Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Congregational Church for more than thirty years. He was also a member of the A.O.U.W. Lodge and also of the Select Knights. He is survived by two sons, C. J. Atkinson, of Fowler, Colo., and E. O. Atkinson, of Butte, Mont.; two daughters, Miss Helen Atkinson, who lives at home, and Mrs. A. E. Gilman, formerly of Emporia, who now lives in Vernon, Texas.
