Miss Allen, 89, a longtime Detroit Lakes resident, died at St. Mary's Regional Health Center on Saturday, May 27. The Rev. Muriel Pool Hachfeld officiated at the service, Melodie Allen was the pianist and the soloist was Eric J. Allen. Serving as the pallbearers were Linda Doebbert, Mary Carol Peterson, Delores Heggestuen, JoAnn Knapp, Lowell McLaughlin, Dave Miller and Dave Eiesland. Josephine Allen was born at Pocahontas, IA on March 2, 1906, graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA and attended Iowa State University and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. She became a fashion illustrator for such magazines as Harper's Bazaar and later returned to teach at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Miss Allen worked in Chicago, went to New York during World War 11 and was a designer for a furrier company. Her family moved from Iowa to Detroit Lakes and she joined the Allens here, where she took up painting. She attended the Grant Wood Art School in Iowa. She belonged to the Yakkety Yacht Club and the North Shore Croquet Club, was a member of the Detroit Lakes Area Artists and was a longtime member of the Democratic party. Surviving is a niece, three great-nieces and two great-nephews. Miss Allen was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, (Byron G. "Barney" Allen) and two nephews.
