Read More	The Tipton Advertiser, Tipton, Iowa, July 5, 1934 Page 1 Mrs. John Wingert, County Pioneer, Is Called This Week Mrs. John Wingert, esteemed pioneer resident of Cedar county and the Tipton community, passed away this week at her home here. Josephine Tevis, daughter of John and Elizabeth Tevis, one of a family of thirteen children, six boys and seven girls, was born September 17th, 1847, at Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. She passed away at her home in Tipton, Iowa, July 3rd, 1934, at the ripe age of 86 years, 9 months and 16 days. Her parents were of the good sturdy pioneer type. They came from Pennsylvania in about the year 1854, and settled in Iowa, locating on a farm southwest of Lowden. Adjoining this farm there was later built the Fairview Church and this became the family church. She grew to young womanhood in this community and on October 22nd, 1868, she was married to Mr. John Wingert. They settled on a neighboring farm and worked and strove, amid many hardships and privations, known only to the pioneers of those days, to build a home and rear a family. To this union there were born three children, Lizzie Belle, Arthur Albert and Peter Earl. The first two have preceded their mother in death. Mr. and Mrs. Wingert moved to Tipton to the present home in 1898 and have lived here from that time to the present. Mrs. Wingert was a great lover of her home and family and was always concerned for the welfare of husband and home and children. The devotion and companionship of these two souls was remarkable. Through nearly 66 years they lived happily together, loving and working out their plans in life. Mrs. Wingert was a kind and devoted mother and gave her best to her children. Kindness and devotion were the essential qualities of her life and these qualities extended to every relationship. Mrs. Wingert, early in life, became a christian and has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years. She was active in the various organizations of the church as long as her health permitted. She loved the church and her christian faith in God and the great spiritual realities were the mainstay of her life. She leaves to mourn her passing the aged husband, the son of Peter Earl, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother, Mr. Hupp Tevis of St. Louis, one sister, Mrs. Virginia B. Cross of Los Angeles, and many other relatives and friends and neighbors. The old assuring miracle Is fresh as heretofore; And earth takes up its parable Of life and death once more. For all her quiet life flowed on As meadow streamlets flow, Where fresher green reveals alone The noiseless ways they go. Her path shall brighten more and more Unto the perfect day; She cannot fail of peace who bore Such peace with her away. How reverent in our midst she stood, Or knelt in grateful praise! What grace of Christian womanhood Was in her household ways! She kept her line of rectitude With love's unconscious ease; Her kindly instincts understood All gentle courtesies. Her dear Lord's best interpreters Are humble souls; The Gospel of a life like hers Is more than books or scrolls. From scheme and creed the light goes out, The saintly fact survives; The blessed Master none can doubt Revealed in holy lives. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home in Tipton, Rev. Roscoe C. Jerrell, pastor of the Tipton Methodist church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W. E. Van Buren. Mr. R. O. Zimmerling and Mrs. Everett Chamberlain sang "The City Four Square," and "In The Garden." Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery near Tipton.
