William's father, also William, and all his family except the son, William and one brother perished in a massacre of settlers in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. Joshua married Mary West, daughter of Owen and Elizabeth Martin West on February 26, 1810 in Pittslvania, Virginia. They migrated to Clinton County, Ohio and in 1813, Joshua purchased a homestead of 300 acres. Joshua was a carpenter and millwright by trade.
