He came with his parents and brothers and sisters to Iowa in 1856. They lived for a time in Liberty township, and about 1863 of (or) '64 settled on the farm where he spent the remainder of his life. He was married to Miss Sue Grout December 3, 1867, and brought her to the old home, and there they journeyed their lives together for 41 years. No children came to brighten their home and (unreadable) declining years. There was a family of eight, six brothers and two sisters, and now there are only two left, Elias, who lives on the adjoining farm and Samuel of Kalona. His friends had known for a long time that his heart was weak, and that his call was likely to come at any time. He had had a bad spell some time ago, but for a few days he had been unusually well. Saturday afternoon about 1:30 he went to the mail box which is out on the main road nearly half a mile from the house. He left home in fine spirits and apparently well. When Marion Keppler, who carries the mail from Kalona, came to the mail box at about 2:30, he found him lying where he had fallen by the box. He had evidently been dead for some minutes. The news soon spread, friends gathered, and loving hands bore the lifeless remains to the home he left so short a time before. He was called from his earthly home to his last rest Saturday, December 19, 1908, being 68 years, 6 months, 26 days old. Though he made no profession of religion, he always led a clean life, and his cheerful manner and lively interest in all that was going on endeared him to all. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends. The funeral occurred at 2 o'clock Monday from Sharon M. E. church. The services were conducted by Rev. Seeds of the M. E. church assisted by Rev. Ramidge of the Evangelical church. The bier was borne by the following: David Troyer, Jacob Troyer, Daniel Kempf, John Rhodes, Gideon Jacob and Philip Schwimley. Mrs. Strickler's sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Omaha, Nebraska were here to attend the funeral. Contributor: Morford (48817140) • [email protected]
