B 13th IA infantry Josiah Bartlett Eyerly was born October 28, 1834, in Richland County, Ohio. Just three months later, infant Benjamin died on March 9, 1839. Daniel's father, Samuel M. Eyerly, married again on March 28, 1839, to Mary Ann "Polly" Thuma. Samuel and Polly welcomed three new half-siblings for Josiah while living near Mansfield in Richland County: Mary Ann (1841) who died as an infant, George (1843), and Erastus (1844). In 1846 Josiah moved with his family to Washington County, Iowa, making the trip from Cincinnati to Keokuk by riverboat and settling on Dutch Creek Prairie in Brighton Township. At that time there were but few families living in the county and there was nothing to be seen but the grass-covered prairies, an occasional grove of oaks and innumerable wild pigeons. Josiah's first work upon arrival in Iowa was to help his father erect a log cabin. According to the 1850 U.S. Census, Josiah farmed his father's land along with his two brothers, Daniel and William. Josiah's father, Samuel, was a carpenter. He built the first mill on the Skunk River near Brighton, and he found considerable demand for his trade as new settlers came into the county. Samuel was very prominent in the early Methodist Episcopal church in Iowa and while living in Washington County helped to organize the first church of that denomination there. During their nine-year stay in Washington County, Mary gave birth to five children: Nancy (1846), Harriet (1848), Catherine (1850), an unnamed son born in 1852 who died as an infant, and Mary (1854). Josiah's parents, Samuel and Polly, relocated the family to Blackhawk Township in Jefferson County, Iowa in 1855, where Samuel became the owner of valuable land. Josiah's sister Alice was born there in 1857. Josiah's educational advantages were limited. In 1855, when he had reached his majority, he separated from his parents' family relocating instead to newly established city of Monroe in Jasper County. Iowa. He first apprenticed as a store clerk for the Hiskey-Kipp Establishment, where he remained for one year. Josiah then continued his apprenticeship at the company's store in Prairie City where he spent two years working as a clerk. During this time he was also Postmaster for Prairie City. The parties that owned the store in Prairie City also owned the store in Monroe. After his two years of service had expired Josiah's employers showed their appreciation of his ability and worth by making him manager of their store in Monroe. Josiah maintained that position for one year, after which he was take in as a partner in the firm. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States as the nation began its descent into Civil War. There were many citizens in and about Monroe who were not loyal to the Union. T. J. Poteet, who was Postmaster, refused to take the Oath of Allegiance to the Union, and was deposed from that office. Josiah Eyerly was one of the most worthy and loyal of Monroe's citizens and was placed in charge of the post office. It wasn't long before Josiah received both the appointment to head of his business firm and appointment as Postmaster of Monroe. At this same time President Lincoln called for three hundred thousand men to stand and join the Union Army. In September, 1861, Josiah enlisted in Company B of the Thirteenth Iowa Infantry. He was mustered on October 21 as a private, along with his brother William. His first month was spent in camp at Davenport. From there he went to St. Louis and in December to Jefferson City, Missouri where he spent his first winter in camp. Josiah and his company were stationed some eight miles out of the city guarding the railroad bridge over the Osage River. In March he joined the regiment and started for Pittsburg Landing, participating in the memorable battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant. The Thirteen Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment participated as part of the Army of the Tennessee during the Battle of Corinth (October 3-4, 1862) under the command of Major General William S. Rosecrans. For meritorious conduct Josiah was promoted to Sergeant-Major of his regiment. A month later he was made First Lieutenant of his company. The Thirteenth Iowa Infantry again served under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant with the Army of the Tennessee in the following battles: Port Gibson (May 1, 1863), Raymond (May 12, 1863), Champion's Hill (May 16, 1863), and Big Black River (May 17, 1863). Josiah was with General Grant in the Seventeenth Army Corps until after the fall of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863). In the winter of 1863 he was appointed mustering officer for the district of Vicksburg. He spent a little more than three years in military service and was honorably discharged November 1, 1864. In 1865, Josiah returned to Monroe and the following year was elected County Treasurer of Jasper County. Josiah moved to Newton and built a house there. He was re-elected County Treasurer, filling that office for two terms. During his term of office the safe was blown open by burglars and some $3,000 of the company's money taken. However, largely through the efforts of Josiah, the thieves were captured. One was sent to the penitentiary for ten years and the other for seven years. One thousand dollars of the money was found and returned. After retiring from the Treasurer's office, Josiah was for several years president of a bank. In 1867 Josiah married Charlotte Piper, a native of Michigan. Charlotte died in 1878, leaving one child, William D. Eyerly. Josiah married Miss Zerua Townsend in 1879. She died seven years later, leaving no children. Following his retirement as bank president, Josiah went into partnership with M. A. Blanchard in the real estate business. Later he was a partner of W. O. McElroy. Socially, he was a Knight Templar, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and a member of the Loyal Legion of Iowa. Josiah married a third time in 1889 to Celia Grandrath, a native of Grant County, Wisconsin. Josiah and Celia had five sons, Joe (1890), Fred (1891), Ralph (1893), John (1898), and Frank (1903). As the years passed Josiah attended to insurance and, eventually, only to private affairs. Josiah's health began to deteriorate during the last few years of his life. He was beset by more serous stomach trouble during the five weeks prior to his death in 1907 at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 15 days. Following funeral services at the Congregational Church, Josiah Eyerly was buried at Union cemetery by the Masons with the Knights of Templar as escort. Joe Eyerly was a good man, very undemonstrative and quiet in disposition, but withal an aggressive and trusty in business.
