OBITUARY Josiah Gilbert Josiah Gilbert was born Feb. 25, 1853, near Cincinnati, Iowa and died Aug. 6, 1916, aged 63 years, 5 months and 11 days. He had many relatives and friends where he was born and grew to manhood, and where Aug. 30, 1873 he married Miss Elizabeth May, who lovely in person and character, died Feb. 7, 1894, leaving him five of the six children born to them. They were Mrs. R. J. Forsyth of Mystic; Mrs. Wm. Showalter (Shoemaker) of Larkspur, Colo.; Frank Gilbert of Indianapolis, Ind.; Chas. Gilbert of Minneapolis and Mrs. Mary Johnson, who passed away in California Aug. 20, 1907. The other child, a daughter, died in infancy. He had eleven grandchildren. The deceased was of the good, public-spirited old Gilbert family, known to early day Cincinnati citizens as co-workers with the Armstrongs, Adamsons, McDonalds and Holbrooks, people who were genial, hard-working, far-seeing. Their mental stamina is still dominant in their descendants. They brought up large families - the father, Josiah Gilbert Sr. boasted of sixteen brothers and two sisters, long since widely scattered over the world. April 12, 1902, he married Mrs. Delia Adams (Fidelia Dutton Adams), who survives him to mourn his loss, together with many loyal friends, step-children and acquaintances. Also his two devoted sisters, Mrs. John Goldsberry of Centerville and Mrs. Ella Chandlee of Cincinnati. He suddenly passed away at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. John Davis, north of Plano, where they were visiting. Short services were held at the home Wednesday morning, the body being taken across the country to Cincinnati and the funeral held in the Christian church at 1:30 p.m. He was then laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery by the side of his first wife.
