Joy's parents Gladys and Paul lived across the alley from my Grandparents Gertie and John Calhoun in Columbus. Our moms were friends and shared the bond in 1953 of expecting children about the same time. Mom said my due date was April 23, but that she always went over and told me, she figured I was waiting for Joy. Joy and I were born hours apart at the hospital in Columbus, May 26, 1953. She joined her 'big brother' Paul. My parents had a ranch a few miles away at Dean, but Mom and Gladys kept in touch through Gertie and the visits to Columbus. Joy would be joined by a baby sister, Sallie. Every year, until we were 5, Joy and I had a combined birthday party. Gertie (Nana) made us angel food cakes that she decorated as dresses with a doll in the center. In Sept of the year we turned 5, my parents bought a ranch in Seeley Lake and moved my family there. Because our birthday was so close to Memorial Day we did get to spend a couple more birthdays together and a few occasional visits when we went to Columbus to see family. We became pen pals and kept track of each other that way. A bond remained whether we wrote once a week or once a year. Our lives were separated by 350 miles but so many things were similar. We wrote to each other about all the important things; boys, classes, and 'stuff'. We were both cheerleaders in High School. I wore Black and Gold, Joy wore Green and White. Joy found a lump behind her knee and went in for tests. It was cancer and they amputated the leg. So began her painful journey. She went on to graduate High School. I quit, got married and started a family. I felt her goodbye that day the cancer won and knew at last she was pain-free. There will always be a connection for me.
