Inscription	:	The base of the headstone has 1864 on one side, "Voluntario" across the front, and 1866 on the other side. His actual birth and death dates are not listed on his headstone.
Description	:	Juan de la Cruz Ruíz y Cordero was born at Carpentería, Alta California, México, September 12, 1843, and baptized 3 days later at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel (BP Baptism 01569). He was the first child of Juan de la Cruz Ruíz y Pico (SBV Baptism 03578) and María Simona Cordero y Valenzuela (BP Baptism 00683). Juan became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. He was the first child of Juan de la Cruz Ruíz y Pico (SBV Baptism 03578) and María Simona Cordero y Valenzuela (BP Baptism 00683). Juan Jr. applied for a Civil War veteran's pension on January 5, 1895 (application no. 1163383, but a certificate was never awarded; probably due to his death on April 6 that same year). Juan de la Cruz Ruiz Jr died of consumption at Sisquoc on April 6, 1895. Source: SB County Certificate of Death, Book A, Page 83. Thomas P. Kelly, the husband of Juan's niece, Maria A. Dominguez de Kelly,(#71551177) procured the headstone for Juan's grave in the 1920's.
