Smythe was born in St. Ancient, Onatario, Nov. 10, 1836. He received his education in the schools and under private tutors, which included Latin and some of the higher branches. He learned his trade as a harness maker under his brother, with whom he worked many years. Oct. 11, 1859 he married Miss Domithilde Turcot, at her home, Sault at Reco'let, a summer resort 9 miles from Montreal. The Re. Dr. J.J. Vinet was the officiating clergyman. In 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Smythe moved to Sioux City. Mr. Dion Keefe, a nephew of Mr. Smythe's, was superintendent of bridges for the C.M. & St. P. railway from Chicago to Sioux City and he was instrumental in leading Mr. Smythe in this direction. In April, 1868, they came to Elk Point and took up a homestead two miles northeast of town. Here they lived some six years, Mr. Smythe working in town a good deal of the time. Mr. Smythe was a public spirited citizen always and took great interest in all matters concerning the welfare of the town and community. Along in the 70's he was elected justice of the peace and has held the office almost continuously ever since. He held the office of county judge a number of terms, his last term closing with last year. When the movement was put on foot here to build the Catholic Church in 1882 he was elected trustee, was very active in this enterprise and held this office some ten or twelve years afterwards. As stated last week, Mr. Smythe died Wednesday evening, March 15, after a brief illness. The funeral was attended Friday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, of which he was a loyal and valued member. Protestant and Catholic alike in large numbers gathered to honor his memory - a splendid tribute to the sterling character and worth of the many who has passed away. The service was conducted by Father Redmond, assisted by Father Robinson of Jefferson. A committee of the business men was in attendance as well as members of the bar, circuit court adjourning for that purpose. The service was impressive and solemn and the floral offerings unusually rich and elaborate. A good man is gone, the whole community mourns his loss and unites in sympathy and condolence with the grieving relatives and friends."
