Messmore of Lincoln, formerly of Beatrice, retired Nebraska Supreme Court judge, died in a Lincoln hospital last night at the age of 79. He served on the Supreme Court from 1937 to 1965. Messmore of Lincoln, formerly of Beatrice, retired Nebraska Supreme Court judge, died in a Lincoln hospital last night at the age of 79. He served on the Supreme Court from 1937 to 1965. Appointed initially in August of 1937 to fill the court vacancy caused by the death of Judge Edward Good, he was elected in 1940 and at each term's end thereafter until his retirement. Messmore was born at Boone, Iowa, July 11, 1889, attended public schools in Council Bluffs, high school in Bedford, Iowa, attended Northwestern Business and Normal College and received his law degree in 1912 from Creighton University College of Law, Omaha. He entered private practice of law in Gage County is 1912, Served as County Attorney from 1915 to 1918, and as County Judge from 1921 to 1929. From 1928 to 1937 he was District Judge for the 18th District, which includes Gage and Jefferson Counties. He was a Methodist, member of the Masons and American Legion, During World War I he served in the Judge Advocate General's Department with rank of major. Surviving are his wife Jennie, Lincoln; sons Hiram A., a Houston, Texas attorney, and Dr. John C., Pocatello, Idaho; and five grandchildren. Another son, Fredrick, was killed in action in 1943. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday from Harman Mortuary Chapel, the Rev. Clarence W. Buehler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen home Cemetery.
