Laycock one of Grant's Foremost Citizens Dies in Portland Funeral for John A. Laycock will be held at Fraternal hall, Canyon City, Saturday afternoon at 1:00. Mrs. M. Grove will conduct the service in the hall, but the funeral will be held by Canyon City lodge No. 34 A. F. & A. M. and Julia Chapter No. 56, O. E. S. of which order deceased was a devoted member. His membership dates back for 50 years and he was master of the Canyon City lodge for five or six terms. He died Wednesday at a hospital in Portland. He left here to attend the funeral of his son John Laycock in California. He was taken ill at Medford and returned to Portland where he died. He was nearly 85 and one of the foremost citizens of Grant. He served as county judge and also as a state senator and he was prominent in the political and financial affairs of the county. He was president of the Grant County Bank. He was born September 5, 1847 in Hancock county Illinois and of sturdy pioneer stock and the burdens and responsibilities of life fell to his lot at the age of 16 when he came west to California. He came to Canyon City November 20, 1865 and engaged in mining and with others erected the first quartz mill in the county at Prairie Diggings. But he soon turned to stock raising and developed one of the best ranches along the John Day which he made his home the rest of his life. His wife died a few years ago. Two sons, William C. and Guy H. Laycock survive. Judge Laycock was quite a remarkable man. His strength for labor seemed to know no bounds and he was rugged and only last year he would take his rifle and go off into the mountains alone. He took life quite seriously, meant what he said and he said what he meant. He was a good friend and one that would stay through thick and thin. He was what we call "all man."
