Born in Bridgewater (Rockingham County), Virginia, Julia was the eldest child of Earl W. and Ella Elizabeth (Miller) Flohr. She married her husband, Maurice E. Metzger on September 3, 1944. He died August 29, 2006. Julia Ann spent her formative childhood years in New Windsor, Maryland and Vienna, Virginia as well as in Nigeria, where her parents served as Church of the Brethren missionaries. She received her bachelor's degree from James Madison University (Harrisonburg, Virginia) in 1941, and her master's degree from Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) in 1942. An educator, Julia Ann began her teaching career at Brunswick (Maryland) High School, where she taught from 1942-1943, and Juniata College (Huntingdon, Pennsylvania) from 1943-1944. After moving to the North Manchester (Indiana) area with her husband, Julia also taught at South Whitley Elementary School from 1965-1969, Urbana Elementary from 1969-1972, and Roann Elementary School from 1972 until her retirement in 1983. Dedicated to peace and justice, Julia Ann and Maurice traveled to Hiroshima, Japan in 1995, on the 50th anniversary of the first atomic bombing, as part of a cross-cultural peace delegation. In addition to her love for travel, Julia was an avid supporter of the arts and music, and enjoyed writing, reading, gardening, and knitting. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers' Association; Guernsey Breeders Association; Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays; Indiana Civil Liberties Union; and the Manchester Church of the Brethren. Julia lived her life striving to leave a positive impact on the world and those living in it. Julia Ann is survived by six children; Dennis (Van) Metzger of Chatham, Illinois, Cynthia (Donald) Mason of Berlin, Pennsylvania, Wendy Metzger of Bradford, Ohio, Teresa Metzger (Philip) Howe of Snohomish, Washington, Catherine Metzger (Beth Miller) of Takoma Park, Maryland, and Erick Metzger (Patty Callahan) of Hebron, Ohio; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her sister, Annabelle (Chester) Cromwell of Arvada, Colorado; two brothers-in-law, Loren (Ruth) Metzger, Leo (Evelyn) Metzger; and three sisters-in-law, Martha (Wilbur) Long, Ruth (Thurl) Metzger, and Grace (Myron) Metzger. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Lewis B. Flohr II.
