He was born June 20, 1918 in Kosciusko County, Indiana to Howard and Iva (Leckrone) Metzger. Maurice graduated from Sidney High School in 1936 and Manchester College in 1940. Metzger, 88, of North Manchester, Indiana, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 5:23AM at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born June 20, 1918 in Kosciusko County, Indiana to Howard and Iva (Leckrone) Metzger. Maurice graduated from Sidney High School in 1936 and Manchester College in 1940. He married Julia Ann Flohr in Vienna, Virginia on September 3, 1944. He served in Civilian Public Service from 1942-1946. Mr. Metzger was a teacher and coach 22 years, teaching social studies and physical education at Sidney, Deedsville, and South Whitley High Schools, retiring in 1968. He also farmed until his retirement in 1985. Maurice and Julia Ann moved to Timbercrest on November 22, 1997. A former basketball coach at Sidney and Deedsville, Maurice was also a member of the Manchester M Club. He played on the 1938 Manchester College men's basketball team, which had an outstanding season and placed fifth in the Indiana State College Conference. Maurice enjoyed traveling, and was also a member of the Guernsey Breeders Association, and enthusiastic Chicago Cubs fan, and an avid reader. He was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Indiana Civil Liberties Union, and also a member of the national and local PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). A member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren, Maurice lived his life and exemplified his faith as stated in Micah 6:8 – doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. Maurice is survived by his wife, Julia Ann Metzger of North Manchester; his six children, Dennis (Van) Metzger of Chatham, Illinois, Cynthia (Donald) Mason of Berlin, Pennsylvania, Wendy Metzger of North Manchester, Teresa Metzger (Philip) Howe of Snohomish, Washington, Cathy Metzger (Beth Miller) of Takoma Park, Maryland, and Erick Metzger (Patty Callahan) of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; five grandchildren; two brothers, Loren (Ruth) Metzger and Leo (Evelyn) Metzger; two sisters, Martha (Wilbur) Long and Thelma (Worth) Ganshorn; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (Thurl) Metzger and Grace (Myron) Metzger. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.
