WIFE: Lenora (Lehmkuhl) Wohlenhaus. -- -- -- -- -- OBITUARY: Junior Leo Wohlenhaus, born April 28, 1927, in Union Township to Fred L. and Laura (Sunderman) Wohlenhaus and married to Lenora (Lehmkuhl) Wohlenhaus, passed away Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. In 1945, Junior graduated as valedictorian of his class from Grant High School where he was also active in sports and music. Throughout high school and later, he played saxophone in the Spiker Big Band. Junior served stateside in the U.S. Army at Fort Monroe, Newport News, Virginia, during the Korean Conflict from 1952 through 1954 as a medical x-ray technician. Prior to that, he was employed by the Newman Body Shop in Lyman, Spiker Chevrolet in Grant, and Lindeman Tractor in Atlantic. When he returned from Service in 1954, he was employed by and became a manager at Lindeman Tractor where he worked for 40 years. Junior then became a real estate agent with Wohlenhaus Realty, followed by Dement Realty Century 21. Junior served for many years on the Cass County Board of Review and was its Chairman for a term. Active in his community, Junior served as a chairperson of the Meals on Wheels program, co-chairperson of a fundraising effort for the Heritage House Good Samaritan Fund, and served as chairperson of the Board of Trustees and in a variety of lay positions at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic over his lifetime. He served many years volunteering with the Methodist Youth Fellowship. He was also an active member of the Democratic Party, serving as chairperson of the county committee, and a frequent volunteer for then-Congressman and later Senator Tom Harkin. Junior also served as an election place volunteer and voting monitor for many years. Junior and Lenora were married on June 27, 1948, at St. John's United Church of Christ, south of Lyman. To their union were born two sons, Dennis Lyle and David John, both of whom died in infancy and two daughters who survive. They are Renee Marie Wohlenhaus of Bethesda, Maryland, and Sarah Louise Wohlenhaus of Chappaqua, New York, along with Renee's husband, Roger Weiner, and son, Andrew Weiner; Sarah's husband, Eric Amundsen, and children Liv and John Amundsen. Junior is also survived by sister-in-law, Iola Muller, of Atlantic; brother-in-law, Grover Lehmkuhl and his wife, Martha, of Villisca; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Lenora, on September 13, 2011, two infant sons, his parents, two brothers, Lloyd and Clair Wohlenhaus, and sister, Leta Wohlenhaus. Also preceding him were sisters-in-law, Helen Wohlenhaus and Grace Wohlenhaus; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Muller and Harry Lehmkuhl and his wife, Dorothy. Services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Pastor Lynette Plambeck officiated. Following a fellowship hour at the church, a committal service was be held at St. John's United Church of Christ cemetery in Lyman.
