EBERHART ARE HELD HERE Well-Known Employee of "U" Succumbs Following Illness of Six Weeks Final honors were accorded J.A. "Bert" Eberhart, 62 years old, well-known Vermillion resident and university employee, at funeral services yesterday afternoon. Rites were conducted at 2:30 o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. W.A. Sauer, pastor of the Star Prairie United Brethren church, to which Mrs. Eberhart belonged, officiated and burial, directed by the Elmore funeral parlors, was in Bluff View cemetery. Mr. Eberhart died in his home at 310 Center street, at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning following an illness that lasted six weeks. About eight weeks ago Mr. Eberhart contracted a severe cold and before he had fully recovered from the illness he attempted to resume his duties at the university. Six weeks ago he became ill again and heart trouble caused his condition to become quite serious. Sunday morning, about 7:15, he informed his nurse he was uncomfortable and asked if he could change his position. Suddenly he lapsed into unconsciousness, apparently suffering another heart attack, and died a short time later. Had Mr. Eberhart lived until Tuesday of this week, he would have been 63 years old. He was born April 28, 1868, in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, and, as a young man, moved to Rapid City. S.D. to become a conductor for the Milwaukee railroad. About 32 years ago he moved here and became a clerk at the Waldorf hotel. About 1911 he moved to Sorum in Perkins county, South Dakota, to homestead and was married there that year to Miss Louise Ester Handcock, a Vermillion woman, who went to Sorum to become his bride. They returned here a short time later and spent five years on the Samuel Harrington farm near Vermillion. Thirteen years ago they moved into Vermillion, Mr. Eberhart having accepted a position as night watchman at the university at that time. Since then he had remained in the employ of the university, becoming custodian of Slagle auditorium, when it was built a number of years ago. During his employment at the university, he became known to thousands of students. He was always cheerful and helpful and was deserving of the many friendships he acquired. Mr. Eberhart is survived by his widow and three brothers, Will M. Eberhart, of Baton Rouge, La., Albert Eberhart, of Black Diamond, Wash., and Rev. Harry Eberhart, Methodist pastor at Flandreau. Sincerest sympathy is extended by the community in Mr. Eberhart's passing. In tribute to Mr. Eberhart, the Volante, university student publication, says this week: "The genial figure of Bert Eberhart, janitor at Slagel auditorium, will be missed by students on the campus, and by alumni who return for visits at the university. Many times have we heard alums who were back cheerily greet Bert, and more than one when he came back has made it a point to go out of his way to say "Hello" to Bert. "He was a familiar figure at all baseball games, at dances, and at all university functions. In his official capacity he was present at all dances on the campus, but never did anyone have cause to resent or complain of a policing attitude on his part, which is more than can be said for some of the others who have taken his place at times. "In his capacity as caretaker of the auditorium, he was always willing to accommodate, and locked doors, single entrances, scowling looks were not associated with Bert, which is also more than can be said for some of the other caretakers of buildings on this campus. "Bert, with his cheery smile, his stubby black cigar, and tactful official capacity at dances is gone and his place will be hard to fill."
