Description	:	Katherine Ida "Kathy" Schmidt was born on Friday November 28, 1947 at Omaha, Douglas County Nebraska. Kathy was adopted by Donald Alfred "Don" and Margaret A. (Hilgenkamp) Schmidt at a young age, she was raised as their only child on the Schmidt's farm north northwest Arlington which was west of the corner of now Road 7 and Road 28, the farm house close GPS estimate is coordinates 41.494158, -96.390857 which sets on the south side of Road 28, in the sixties a second farm house stood to the east which was where Kathy's Grandma Edna lived. (Hilgenkamp) Schmidt at a young age, she was raised as their only child on the Schmidt's farm north northwest Arlington which was west of the corner of now Road 7 and Road 28, the farm house close GPS estimate is coordinates 41.494158, -96.390857 which sets on the south side of Road 28, in the sixties a second farm house stood to the east which was where Kathy's Grandma Edna lived. Kathy was baptized and confirmed at the Paul's Lutheran Church north of Arlington. Kathy was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Walther Leaguer, this is how I first met her bowling. We later went on hayrack rides and did many other Walther Leaguer events. One day we headed to Wolfe Brothers western wear at Omaha, "yellow submarine" played on the car radio. I purchased Kathy a pair of lavender boots which really looked great on her. We went steady for a short while, exchanging our class rings. Before I left for the service, we gave our rings back. I later arrived home after basic training stopping at the Fremont 4-H Fair, she wasn't aware I was in the grandstand. Kathy was showing her prize winning sheep and wearing her western gear. Kathy was an excellent livestock 4-H sheep showman. Driving her home that day she turned and asked me if I was her he-man. At the end of my leave I left for my Air Force schooling in Denver Colorado, I recall the letters she wrote to me with the return address sign "KIS". Kathy graduated from Arlington High during this time in 1966. Kathy attended the University of Nebraska, the next time I was home on Air Force leave I picked Kathy up at her Lincoln boarding house. We went for a top down ride in my "67" Chevy Chevelle and I left her drive, we had a great time. Kathy always had a love for the Ford Mustang, it was a very popular car at that time. During this time Kathy joined the Catholic faith, I recall attending a pizza event with her. Sometime after that we lost track of each other, I regret that to this day. Kathy received a journalist degree, she was first employed by the Fremont Guide and Tribune, then the Lincoln Journal-Star. In the beginning of the New Year of 1971 Kathy took a reporter position for the High Plains Journal at Dodge City, Wyandotte County Kansas, a new start for her. Before the end of January on the 30th around 10:30p Kathy was alone traveling westbound just a few miles outside of Greensburg, Kiowa County Kansas when her Volkswagen left the road striking a telephone pole and rolled over. Kathy sustained fatal neck injuries. My mother sent me Kathy's obituary. When we dated, she had an intuition she would die very young. Sadly Kathy passed late that Saturday evening January 30, 1971 at the age of 23 years, 2 months, 2 days which does not include her last day, she lived a total of 8,464 days. Kathy's funeral services were held at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Fremont on Wednesday February 3, 1971 at 2p with the Rev. William M. Rucker officiating. Kathy was interred in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery "God's Acres" north of Arlington. Reckmeyer Funeral was in charge of her arrangements. I'm hopeful someday to hear from her biological Omaha Family. Kathy's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to Kathy by her best friend in the sixties Loren R. I believe all lives matter, even the lives of those who have passed.
