Kathleen Elizabeth Torkelson, daughter of Edward and Louisa Dowling, was born May 7, 1909 at Ewing, MO. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where she received her education. Upon graduation, she was employed as a bookkeeper at Fishgalls in Sioux City. She was united in marriage to Omer J. Torkelson on April 24, 1930 in Sioux City. In 1936, they moved to Sioux Rapids, where they farmed and raised cattle until they retired in 1970 and moved into Sioux Rapids. Kate was a member of the First Lutheran Church, enjoyed crocheting, doing needlework and other crafts and raising flowers and doing things for her family and friends. Due to failing health, Kate entered the Sioux Care Center February 28, 1990 and it was there she passed away on Thursday morning, September 16, 1993 at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 9 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Frank and George and one sister, Anna Mae. She is survived by her husband, Omer of Sioux Rapids; three daughters and their husbands: Myrtle and Leo Schachtner of Fonda, Carol and Denzel Thorpe of Nemaha and Kathleen and Roland Mitchell of Rembrandt; one brother, James H. Dowling and his wife, Sue, both of Fallbrook, CA.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a host of many relatives and friends.
